ls1 cam in l98

i am having my motor rebuilt on my 1991 Camaro l98 block and a friend has a stock ls1 cam out of his motor...i wanted to know if the computer will work right in my car with the ls1 cam
i also have had the old push in rocker studs removed and installed threaded on with 1.6:1 roller rockers and guide plates, adj fuel pressure reg, SLP runners and 22pound injectors and there is also a stage1 chip in the computer the rest of the motor is stock

the guy doing my motor tolded me the last one he put a cam in, the car would not run right and it would keep turning on the check engine light

Re: ls1 cam in l98

you need the specs on the cam and then you can get a chip from hyperteck or jet set for that combo then you should be ok iv never done it but thats what i was told

Re: ls1 cam in l98

91, I may be wrong but how is a LS1 cam going to fit into your L98? The L98 block and LS blocks are 2 different types of animals are they not? I would assume the cams are different as well.

Re: ls1 cam in l98

the block may be a little different but the cam is the same and the firing order is the same for all small block 350, the only thing that i saw that was different was the pin in the front of the cam. the pin on an ls1 cam is longer but that is easy to fix

well have a custom chip burned sound like the was to go here or i just leave it alone

o crap sorry guys it is an lt1 cam not an ls1

Re: ls1 cam in l98

LS1 cars do not have a distributor, before you do a lot of work pulling the intake and camshaft out take a minute to reflect. There is no distributor gear on an LS1 car, they use coil packs and a sensor to sense the position of the camshaft.

Re: ls1 cam in l98

LSX cams do the 4/7 swap as well. With no dizzy gear to run the dizzy and therefore the oil pump, you should do some rethinking about this swap.

Re: ls1 cam in l98

I didn't know the LSx series did the 4/7 swap? That's cool. I think it was coming to the scene in Nascar a years back when I first started looking at the benefits. The dizzy gear not being on the cam was the original point I tried to make with my different block comment. I didn't think provisions were there for it. Not like GM to put / pay for something that wasn't needed.

Re: ls1 cam in l98

All LS series engines have the 4/7 swap gm did that in development.(all you have to do with a 4/7 swap cam is change the firing order on the cap bc num 4 and 7 cyl are in phase with eachother.

The cam is totally different and will not fit in older gen 1 and 2 small blocks.
i believe the cam bearing journals are a different size and the cam is also shorter. the ls series block is 3 inches shorter then gen 1 ans 2 small blocks.

I don't know the l98 cam specs but an LT1 cam out of a camaro is 202/208 duration at 050 lift and 450/450 lift with 1.5 rockers. I put this cam in my motor and it really likes it but mine is a cubic inch callanged 305.ah to dream of someday puttin a 350 in her.

Re: ls1 cam in l98

An LT1 cam is pretty similar in duration to an L98 camshaft, but with more lift. It would be like putting 1.6 rockers on your L98.

What else are you doing to your heads? I'm assuming they're stock? The screw-in rocker studs are a good idea, but you'll want new springs to handle the extra lift with 1.6 rockers. I recommend Manley 22410-16 springs and 23652-16 retainers.

Re: ls1 cam in l98

first yes the shop put in all new springs and that stuff...i do not know if the shop over charged me but does 700$ sound right for a "true 3 angle valve job" or that is what he told me ,install studs, the studs, spring, locks, guide plates and take 10thow of the head

and if putting 1,6:1 rockers is like putting in an lt1 cam i do not see the point then...i think i will just leave it alone.....
thanks of all the good ideas

Re: ls1 cam in l98

$700 for a 3 angle valve job is almost highway robbery when you can buy brand new aftermarket heads that have a better valve job done for not much more.

Re: ls1 cam in l98

just for the record, even if the LS1 cam and the L98 cam were the same length with the same journal size, there is still no way it would work. the positioning of the lobes for intake and exhaust is totally different. for example, on #3 cyl., you would have the exhaust lobe of the LS1 cam trying to open the intake valve on your head.

Re: ls1 cam in l98

Consider the lt4 hotcam. You can find the cam and springs for a good price and little use.
