New member just sayin' hello...& a super ram question
Hi there, just signed up here & thought I'd say hello, write a little blurb about myself & ask a question.I'm from Edmonton,Alberta,Canada & a huge F-car fanatic, all 4 gens.I've been an auto technician for 15 years, last 12 at a GM dealer.I've got an '89 IROC,5.7,loaded,factory ordered it(NO t-roofs!)Just turned over 62,000km(40,000 miles)never seen snow or rain, still mistaken for new thanks to Mothers polish! At this time the mods are as follows Hyper tech chip, pullies, pressure reg.,MSD 6A,Hooker competition headers, flowmaster.Heads have been ported/polished,3 angle grind, back cut valves, screw in studs, bronze guides, guide plates.Crane Compucam .482/.469 lift,214/220 dur.Dana 44 rear end,3.54.TCS 2800 stall prolocker conv.Aluminum driveshaft.LPE Super Ram base,runners,plenum,52 mm TB.Best ET so far 13.2@102,1.78 60'(2400' elev.).BUT here's the thing, after I installed the super ram I had absolutely zero et or speed increase.A friend of mine I work with(the tune up whiz at work!..he's got a Syclone that's running 11.8@117)we checked the scan data & found I was getting 15-17 degrees of knock retard!Fuel pressure is ok,49-50 psi & steady at wot.O2 sensor reading 300-600mv which is lean.We are thinking possibly the stock fuel pump doesn't have enough flow & maybe causing a lean knock condition. Also wondering about the cam,Lingenfelter recommended cam for the super ram has very similar duration but has a fair bit more lift.Anybody's thought's/experiences are welcome.1.6 roller rockers are planned for next year(I think it "should" be running mid 12's with no knock???)Only ran the super ram for 3 events at the end of the season so track testing has been limited.VERY frustrating seeing as with our s*** a** exchange rate,by the time it got here, cost me almost $3000!!!...oh well, everything under the hood is chrome or polished so at least it looks pretty!I haven't had a chance to look through all the archives regarding super ram questions,so I'm sorry if this issue has been addressed somewhere already.I also have a '93 454SS,white,factory ordered it as well.Fairly stock for now, just put a cam in it the end of this year, flowmaster,TB spacer, lowered 4/6,65,000km.Haven't run it yet with the cam, really needs headers though & more!1969 Grand Prix model J,428 motor, all original.Inhierited it from my Dad a few years ago,he bought it from the original owner in '73.And an '89 GTA,5.7,stock,loaded,114,000km & for sale.So that's a little(or allot)about myself.Sorry for being so longwinded right off the start, thanks for your time!

Welcome to thirdgen.org.
Just a thought, but I've heard the SR is/can be, prone to vacuum leaks.
What are your IAC counts at idle? If zero or close to zero, then you may want to look for vacuum leaks on the plenum/runners.
You are correct, the engine is a bit lean. Have you checked the duty cycle of the injectors? You may have some room by opening up the PW for WOT which would require you to get into the EPROM, or have someone burn one for you..or DFI/Haltech/Commander, etc, to run the system.
Good luck, I bought my '89 IROC new as well, but cold only afford the "Group2" option at the time...wish I' had the extra grand or so then, to get the group 3 option package.

Hypertech chips are pretty agressive with the spark curve; try retarding the distributor, or a stock-style chip (a custom burned chip would be a lot better!) to see if that helps you out.
A scan to see your O2 voltages would also help determine if it's a lean knock or not.

After the S.R. was installed, adjusted the TPS to around .67 volts, this got the IAC down to around the 30-40 range.I've heard about the vacuum leaks as well but I couldn't find any last time I checked.A friend of my with that Syclone had a similar problem with 10-12 degree's false knock, took him awhile to find the problem. It was the converter chattering between locked/unlocked.They burned a chip to keep it locked & he went from 13.3 to 12.06 with no other changes(I wouldn't have believed him if I hadn't been there to see it!)Anybody had anything like that?My TCS 9" pro locker conv. was worth a solid 1/2 sec alone & made a huge difference in low end throttle response, best $ I ever spent! As far as chips go,who's had good results with who's chip's?Mines a Hypertech stage 2,been ok so far but I think it's time for a change.Unfortunately it will have to wait till spring now, first test n tune is May 5.Sledn' season now! Thanks for any input.
