Header self-installation

I'm thinking of getting Hooker shorties and I'm wondering how hard it is to install them myself? I got quoted at $200 from a shop to do the installation but I'm thinking that's a little too high for me.

Depending on how equipped you are with tools and talent, $200.00 is not to bad thats about 4-6 hours labor. It can be a tedious task, if you are not patient pay the loot.
When I did my SLP headers I had to replace the engine mounts to get the drivers side header to even come close to the head. The mounts are prone to sag. And two of the exhaust manifold bolts broke coming out. Thats my $.02.

That's what I was wondering...At $200, you're right about aprox. 4 hours labour...And that's someone who's done it before. If that's the case, it would probably take me about 8 hours!

its not too hard to get the old manifolds off and put your headers in place. its fabricating a y-pipe or getting all the brackets that hooked to an exhaust bolt to work with the headers.
plan on a good day or two. but to me 200 bucks is a lot and i just like working on my car. in actuality 200 bucks to put on headers is not a bad deal

Hey whats up andrew.

Im with Andrew on this one, I installed mine in about 5 hours including breaks and friends that show up more to distract you than help. i think it was pretty easy. they slid right in, I think if your removing the AIR system like i did it will be easier. Also if you do it yourself and finish it like me at 12:00 AM without your custom Y-pipe (open headers) you can let the whole neighborhood let you know that you have added horsepower and reduced ET's, and improved sound, in a few measly hours by yourself. With the shorties My friends over a mile away could hear me start up my car when I was going to the exhaust shop to get my y pipe made. They said it sounded like John Force. i remember the day im sure my neighbors do too. it was only 6 months ago.

If you are halfway mechanically inclined i'd do them myself. Just devote a whole day to the job and take your time. If you get frustrated walk away. Take the $200 and buy some LCA's or something

Thanks guys...I've got the whole winter to think it over. I'll be getting the Hooker y-pipe to go with the headers, so that part I'm not concerned about. And I plan on keeping the AIR system in place (darn emmissions tests) so I guess I gotta factor in the time for that too.

There is a set of those hooker headers with a Y-pipe in a junkyard down the street from me. THey look pretty much the same as my Flowtechs.. And my flowtechs took me like 45 minutes to install, but understand this was on a new motor with the old manifolds off,
and with a lift.

btw, I like the flowtechs, and they're cheap too. $199.00 for the whole kit.

The hookers are pretty much the same tho, like I said. Don't pay someone else to do your work. You'll never learn that way.

Are the Flowtechs emmissions legal? If so, I may very well look into those.

OHHHHH ... See, I thought this was a post on headers that installed themselves. If anyone is looking for a good way to make money, develop some self installing headers, that way you completely avoid paying somebody to put them on for you!
