Hey guys,

Im buying a new coil for my '86 305TPI. I was looking at the Accel in-cap supercoil, but on Summit's pages it's listed for 87s but not 86s - will it not work?

wont work for any tpi system, tpi uses a small cap distributor and a remote coil, so theres no place to mount that(correct me if im wrong but i havnt seen one where theres room for a large cap distributor

 

wrong and right. 85-86(type-o) tpi used the large coil in cap distributer. it will work

 

My 86 also has the big in-cap coil - hence the question

They even make a special TPI extension piece as the stock one won't fit:

OK...From the facrory, 87 & earlier had external, smaller cap distributors, later years had the large, HEI (in-cap-coil) distributor.

Apparently, your 86 is not the original engine. But since you have a HEI dizzy, that Accel coil-in-a-cap (HEI) will work fine for your car.

Funny...My 68 Camaro didn't have HEI....I see how bad MY typing was above...GEEZ!

Last time I checked, 68 is pre-86

And just to have it said - yes, it is the original engine in my car but I guess that was pretty obvious as it was stated that 86 and earlier thirdgens had the big cap internal coil hei.
