can't wait to see what that thing's gonna do! Do you think you'll be able to take a video of a 0-60 or 1/4 mile run? And I forgot to mention... I love how it looks stock with the exception with the braided fuel/PS lines... but those still fit in perfectly. Looks like it just rolled off the assembly line.

Dude my hats off to you for going this route!
I will be following this thread for sure. I'm sure you may know this already, or a member has already posted it. But the TPI was originally designed for the 305. When GM came out with the 350 TPI, they just took the 305 TPI and put it on a 350. If I recall they just changed the injector size, but everything else on the top end stayed the same.

THanks man. It's not quite the way it will look once it's done. I don't have the radiator in yet and the braided stainless fuel lines will be a but more hidden. Thanks for the nice comments. Once the blower goes on, they will be even more difficult to pick up on them. I wanted to do something a little more different. I put the serp belt system on and couldn't use the stock fuel hard lines. We'll see how it turns out.

Yes, I sure have heard and agreed the GM designed the TPI around the 305. Thanks for the encouragement. The ECM is programmed a bit differently as well for the 350, but who's counting.
I was bleeding the brake system tonight. Man, there was so many leaks. Was trying my best to not let any brake fluid get on the paint. Hard to avoid. I need to get in touch with Wilwood, it's a nightmare to bleed their four piston calipers. Crap design.

I saw someone else on this thread recommending a chip from Ed Wright. I got one from him, and it really woke my IROC up! Is that what you did, or something similar?

I actually spoke with Ed about a year ago about my build. I will wait until I get the engine up and running...work out as many bugs as I can...and then install the ATI procharger. Reason being... i don't want to wait to start the engine when everything is done because that will just add to the complication. anyway, i could have just said i'm working with Ed and he has a program that fits my build once I'm ready. He said he programed a chip for someone that has a corvette with the same cam, and exhaust mods. He will use that program and tweak it some for the differences in fuel metering and possibly some other parameters. I'll put up some more pics once my headers, y-pipe, intermediate pipe, and tail pipes are ready.

Well, I got everything back from the blaster. They look great but hit a road block because the donut gaskets for the headers didn't fit. I ordered them from Summit, they are the #6961 Edelbrock gaskets but they are too small! I wonder if I can get the right size from a local auto parts store.

Re: Here's goes the crazy 305 TPI Build

Just a few tips....

First, you should a dremel tool with reinforced cut-off wheels to make the lover cuts, then use the small dremel sanding rolls to round the corners of the new openings. That would make the vents look cleaner. Then mask off the bottom of hood and on top arround the louver part of hood and paint that area a satin black before installing the louver. Next, you have your driver side valve cover backwards, rotate it 180* The oil fill cap should be closer to the front of the car where it's more accessible.

Nice build thusfar, keep up the good work!

Re: Here's goes the crazy 305 TPI Build

This is a really impressive build. I want to stick with my 305 too just because. So, I actually have a question for 305sbc. My mods are:
Edelbrock base intake
Edelbrock runners
Matched plenum
Summit headers and y pipe
Hi flow cat and 3" Flowmaster cat back
My next step is headwork. Your threads on L98 heads and or LS1 valves on 416 heads are very interesting but I'm wondering what you would suggest best fits my current mods. After that I'll match a cam. My purposes for this car are mostly cruising but it might see some circuit track time. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks so much for the feedback man. Actually, i have a die grinder with the sand rolls that would would great if the plastic didn't melt after a few seconds. I tried a few different approaches and the very time consuming hand filing (and drilling) come out the best. I don't mind putting in the extra time if it comes out with a better result. Ideally, you're idea sounds much better. Thanks for the advice on painting. Oh the driver's side valve cover was installed that way from the factory, otherwise i would need to come up with a different pcv hose. You are right though, it would be better to have the filler cap towards the front of the engine.

Very nice work being done here. Looks like you have been working on this car for more than a year - shows commitment! I'm very interested in your results - my 88 came with a complete rebuilt 305 when I got it and it had only run for 1 month before getting into storage for 2 years. I've got it running sweet and I'm just getting the body work done now - looking to drive it this summer - but this winter will be looking to add some ponies!

Thanks very much. Yes, I'm sad to say it's been a slow build... 7 years! Between money (or lack of) kids, breakups, etc.. it's taken me quite some time. I just started the engine yesterday and am pleased to say it started! It ran quite rough but it started on the first crank. My fuel pressure gauge is reading 42 psi. It almost feels one of the cylinders is not firing. I will look at it closer tomorrow. I'm so happy my windows, hatch, gauges, and a bunch of other things seem to be working. There are some things i did notice that are having issues though. I'll just need some time to work them out.
Cool to hear about your rebuilt 88, have fun with it.

I've been watching your build as well and am enjoying it too. It looks like you have spent some serious time and dough. I'm building a 305 TPI right now too, probably for my 86 Camaro. Is your first start on a stock chip?

Thanks so much, I'm glad you're checking it out. Yes, too much time and money to keep track of. I do ask Summit a silly question every once in a while just to see what they say. I'll ask "can you please tell me how much I've spend on parts since day 1?" ah... it's my own entertainment..

Yes, I'm using the stock chip and it is now running pretty well. Just adjusted the base timing today.

Re: Here's goes the crazy 305 TPI Build

UPDATE:
Today I got the engine running nicely. It turned out to be a vacuum leak. I did the TB Bypass but two of the hose inlets on the pass side were left unplugged. I thought they were just coolant passages. I taped them and the engine smoothed out. I'm very happy to say I was able to set the base timing (by unplugging the EST wire) 6 degrees BTDC. I've got some exhaust leaks (at the slip joints) but that's becuase I used crappy T-bolt clamps. I ordered band clamps and that should take care of it. I need to post a vid of it running. I was so surprised almost everything electronic works. Even with this much larger cam to check engine light does not come on. The next step is to get the exhaust taken care of and the front and rear brakes on... stay tuned....

Don't forget to check your minimum air rate on the throttle body and the tps.

Have you let it go into closed loop?

And definetly try and get a video up that would be cool.

Re: Here's goes the crazy 305 TPI Build

wow, this makes me get goosbumbs... I love the litlle 305 tpi!!! I have just recently did some work on my 305, but it may not be a good build after all. After a ton of researching and reading articles, I came to find out that the place that i bought my heads from sent me the 58 cc 2.02 intake 1.6 exhuast heads...... and I also put a 1.6 roller rockers on it too. I did run the engine and I know that it is running well but not to its full potential!!

I just wanted to say that i love what you did with this car! great job!

I just wanted to say that i love what you did with this car! great job!
I thought that 2.02 valves would hit if using much cam lift..... 1.6 rockers too? What cam do you have?

Re: Here's goes the crazy 305 TPI Build

I have a stock cam in it. basicly the stock heads were junk so I just replaced them and the lower intake manifold. I have been reading and told from a few people that they would not work but they do.

here is a sample without headers, just a short clip!

Thank you so much. Hey, the only reason i was able to do a lot of research before making any changes is due to not having money. That was a blessing in disguise. I'm surprised 2.02 intake valves are clearing without any issue...especially with the 1.6 ratio.. are you using the stock cam? Thanks again for the nice compliments, I appreciate that.

Have you let it go into closed loop?

And definetly try and get a video up that would be cool.
Thanks for the suggestions! I cleaned out the Air Idle Control valve, there really wasn't much carbon build up but... i did inspct and clean it. I'm going to next check the voltage output on the TPS to see if I'm within tollerance. As far as the closed loop mode, I forgot how to confirm that occurs, but my cooling fan came on and the thermostat opened up. Any feedback on that?

Yes, I will get a vid up.

That's for sure. well, normally aspirated... maybe a moddest 260 HP. once the D1-SC is in place.. I'm looking to get close to 400. That's the next step in this project.

Good question. I'm not familiar enough with the vortec heads. I don't know if your 305 truck heads are any different than the vortec heads you can get from Scoggin Dickey or others. I know the vortec heads that come standard on many of the crate engines flow quite a bit more than stock 305 Camaro heads and you may have an issue with the size of the valves running into the 305's cylinder wall..or loosing a bit or torque on the low end, due to the Vortec's increased intake and exhaust runners. Do some searching on the Vortec heads on the 305

wow, i'm really surprised there's no issue. Are you sure you don't have a 350? Grats that you got it started, that's quite an accomplishment! I watched the vid!

Okay, here's a vid of the engine being started up. It's a real short vid because I don't have a memory card for my camera yet... but here it is on you tube...
