WHAT ALL DO I NEED TO GO FROM TBI TO TPI?

WAZ UP ALL THIRD GENERS IM NEW HERE IM KING. I CURRENTLLY HAVE A 89 RS CONVERTABLE IT CAME WITH A 305/700R4 COMBO I PULLED THE TRANNY OUT FIRST IT WAS MAKING NOISE I PUT IN A B&M STAGE TWO 700 R4 AND A FEW MONTHS LATER I PUT IN A 383 . MY TBI SETUP IS NOT CUTTING IT SO ITS TIME TO GO TPI. SO WHO ALL KNOWS WHAT PARTS I WILL NEED FOR THE SWAP THE 383 I HAVE NOW IS A ROLLER CAM BLOCK SO UIM GOOD THERE , BUT I KNOW I NEED THE INTAKE, RUNNERS, INJECTORS, ECU. WHAT ELSE DO I NEED DO I NEED THE DISTRO. FROM A TPI MOTOR I FIGURE ONCE I HAVE ALL THE PARTS AND THEY WORK ON THE CAR THEN I WOULD GET BIGGER INJECTORS AND A CUSTOM TUNE .

The easiest way to do a swap is to find an entire car and get the pieces off of it...

You will need:
Fuel tank pump & Sender, Fuel lines, Intake, Runners, Fuel rails, ECM, Wire harness, Dual Fan setup (to do it right) ECM & a bunch of odd's & Ends like clips clamps, screws Etc.

Also it depends on the year but some years the dash wires are also different...

It is NOt a weekend job, to do it RIGHT should take you about a week to get everything on the car, if you want to clean everything up before you put it back together like I did it will take you a good month. I would actually recommend getting the fuel tank sender from the The donor car and then replace the pump with a new one even if it does not need it as its a PITA to change anyways...

Good luck

Go to www.chevythunder.com and read a lot there as well as here. He has some good info on making changeover and repinning harness.
There's a lot of info here also. Try the DIY PROM, TPI, and TBI threads also.
By the way, turn off the caps. It has the same effect as screaming in computer terms.
There's also a classified section on here where you might find what you need. You might also want to check out the following thread. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tpi/...-opinions.html
I would sell a TPI unit if you can't find one. I have several ECM and memcal units as well. Shipping to you might be expensive. All my future projects will probably be OBDII using the 0411 PCM.

What is the need for the sending unit? TBI still has an in tank pump. The TBI pump uses a rubber hose in place of the pulsator that the TPI pumps get.

On my S10, there was no difference. The TPI unit swapped right in place of the old TBI pump.

Just change the pump.
I've done it a couple times.

What year are the dashes incompatible?

Re: WHAT ALL DO I NEED TO GO FROM TBI TO TPI?

THey are all basically compatible, you should even be able to swap a Firebird into a Camaro, from just about any year... Just unbolt and rebolt... Keep in mind that some other things changed too, like the steering columns are slightly different, but you can change the parts from one to the other...
Depending on how particular you are:
Seeing that you have a 91, you should probably stick with a 90-92 as the dashes for those years are different enough than the earlier models that it would make it more simple. The obvious is your IP is different, and the foam filled lower part of the dash. AND they all have the Airbag provisions, AND the fact that thru 1989 the camaro used a cable driven speedo and starting in 1990 it was electronic...

What you really have to be careful of is the pin outs and making sure when you plug them in from a LO3 into a L98 or LB9 that the wires are all the right color... YOU MAY be able to actually use the same Dash and simply replace the wiring for the Engine, The dashes may be the same or similar enough not to be a big issue... When I did my conversion I actually was lucky enough to find another 1987 Setup and I just swapped over everything, it made the whole project a TON easier and more straight forward than trying to piece everything together...

I will leave it at that.

John...
