Im just confused...
Hi everyone. I purchased a 1987 Iroc Z28 with a L98 automatic a few months ago. The guy told me it had heads and cam, blah blah blah. He put in a 2800 converter on a freddy brown transmission. Hooker shorties and a really really bad designed exhaust.
Now I know NOTHING about L98's as I was heavily into the Ls1 and my 408 on my 01 camaro.
My questions are this..
1)- what the hell can I do to this motor to wake it up? (P.S. there is no heads and cam package on this car.. it is stock)
2)- Is there cold air induction systems?
3)- Who tunes these cars on the north east?
4)- The guy said he did a chip but never tuned the car.
Any help would be great.
The mileage is around 89,900 BEFORE he messed with the speedo and it stopped working. I know he really didnt drive the car at all. He was broke and an exaggerator obviously.
I originally was going to do a LS2 swap and nitrous but I just found out my wife is pregnant so I will be just doing up this puny L98.. Thanks everyone!
P.S. this is a really cool website

Well, there are tons of aftermarket parts for it, but if you're planning on keeping it TPI, I'd probably aim for torque. It's not very easy to make a TPI setup flow very well at high RPM, above say 4500-5000. Compared to an LS1 car, the TPI system is more basic, but the fundamentals are still the same. You can actually do your own chip tuning and programming, if you want to go that route. For about the cost of an aftermarket chip, you can buy the required equipment, and re-tune as many times as you want. Have a look at http://www.moates.net/ for chip programming stuff.
I'd consider the basic upgrades, such as heads and cam, porting, headers and exhaust, etc. I would also dare say that it's probably cheaper to build up an L98 than an LSX, at least as far as the longblock is concerned. There's just as much aftermarket as for the LSX cars too, so things like cold air systems, exhaust systems, suspension, etc are all available. Supercharger systems are available too, but are expensive, and you probably could swap an LS2 for that much money. I guess what I'm getting at is that there are plenty of routes, but it depends on what you want to do with the car.

thank you. I guess the search is on for l98 stuff.
Wish I would have bought the ls2 when I first got the car.. that way the wife couldnt argue that the money needed to go towards the baby! LOL
