Strut Mounts Moog or Fouunders? Need Quick Answer!

A bit confused...

I read 1 place that the aftermarket Moog ones fit 82 to 86 and that you need a different retainer plate for 87 to 92 cars... But on the Spohn website, it says the opposite... Says aftermarket ones only fit 87 to 92 (I have a 91) and you need the Spohn plates for 82 to 86 cars?

Pleases answer quickly

I ordered some AC Delco ones... the left one made in China, bearing was good, the right one made in Taiwan, bad bearing, replaced and IT TOO had a bad bearing... sent both back and now Rock Auto is waiting to ship out 2 Moog ones... "Still in warehouse" won't ship til Monday....

If i need to spend another $35 on Spohn plates, then I think I should just get the Founders...

Stock Height, Street Car...

Thoughts?

If its a daily driver go Moog. I have founders and very happy with them you can get more caster with them for the track. BUT they have solid spherical bearing in them. Moog has it in a rubber cushion. Ride is harsher with founders. Since I track my car I am fine with that if was daily driving it not so much...

Thanks for the advice... I do prefer comfort over race.

Do I need the Spohn retainer plate for my 91?

You should be able to use the stock ones unless they broke... Assuming you are talking about the plate that. Goes under the fender with the 3 bolts to bolt the strut mount to. It is not a high stress item for street stock is more than good enough. The spring pressure is what is primarily holding mount to the fender. The plate with bolts only keep it in one place. Goes without saying will need frt end aligned once done. Check your drag link also it will wipe outout tires fast if worn. With a ruler at the tie rod if you can move it 1/8" or more with 25lbs of force replace it (per the helm service manual). Also if replacing it pay attention to the center link. The height of the drag link is adjustable from the flats under inner tie rod holes in the center link to center of the front LCA bushing bolt MUST be same ( Iroc's are 17mm) other wise your Ackerman angle will be wrong.

For those who may be unaware of the two versions of the retainers, here's what I discovered several years ago (Spohn should be giving me a kickback, post #19, lol). Especially note post #3:

So to clarify, the aftermarket ones fit the 87 - 92 retainers...
JamesC, you have an 85/86 an got 88 retainers that fit...

I see that some now have a bigger hole / rectangel and may need a washer...

Ok, I'll stick with the Moog...

Thanks!

To get the Monroes to fit, I needed the second version (87-92) retainer. The same retainer also fit my Spohn and my Founders strut mounts. Personally, I wasn't aware of any ride difference between the Monroes and the Spohn and/or Founders pieces.

Re: Strut Mounts Moog or Fouunders? Need Quick Answer!

Spohn has the better design for retaining the bearing in the cup. Get them over the others mentioned.
DSE has the trick ones - for adjusting caster & camber independently. Most street machines won't need. If you like to tinker with settings (street->track->street) they're the ones to get.
Not only did I get the retainer wishbones, I also got the plates that they ship with the coil-overs - Added insurance.
