Backfiring Problems. Please Help......

Im working on my brother's '90 Iroc. We recently swapped out the exhaust manifolds for a set of Edelbrock Headers & Y-Pipe (Jeg's Part # 350-68762) and ever since then we have been getting backfires. I already checked the timing, timing chain, I even went ahead and did a head job (due to a bad diagnosis of suposivly having bad valves.) The car continues to backfire. We also removed all of the AIR/Smog stuff. Including removing the smog/air tubes off the headers, removing the diverter valve, dis-connecting/unplugging the smog pump, both cats came off, and we blocked off the egr valve. A buddy of mine is telling me that the removal of the AIR equipment is the reason for the backfires. I read the entire sticky on removing the AIR stuff, and nobody else seems to be having this problem. Im fresh out of ideas . Please....any help, ideas or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks
