SLP Cold Air intake help

Bought a used SLP cold air intake and need some help. It didn't come with some of the parts. What it did come with is the filter and air box two Air ducts and the mas bracket. I found the instructions for the SLP kit on summit racing web site although they no longer sell the cold air kit for my 87 Pontiac Trans AM. I bought all the screws from a hardware store. Not sure if they are all the right one's. What I need is the Canister wiring harness. You have to relocate the charcoal canister to the drivers side of the car between the battery and the raditor. Step 10 of the instructions. Cut the electrical connection for the charcoal canister 6" from the electrical connection and the wiring harness to allow relocation of the charcoal canister. Crimp each of the butt connectors twice. Anyone know the part number for the wiring harness that goes to the charcoal canister or can I just take wire and extend it? I need the fuel vent line as well and need to know what size it is? The instructions and a the picture of the cold air kit I have included with this post.

Re: SLP Cold Air intake help

when I installed my SLP cold air all I did was disconnect the canister move it over to the driver side, just re routed the wiring for it and went up to Advanced auto parts for a length of tubing (dont remeber what size but I didnt need much, they gave it to me for free) I did not have to do any wiring at alll.

Re: SLP Cold Air intake help

So the wire should be long enough to stretch over to the drivers side? Do you have any pictures of what SLP cold air kit looks like installed on your? Pictures from the drivers side and passenger side?
Thanks
Steve

Re: SLP Cold Air intake help

I wish I had better pics but these are what I do have of the system. You can see the canister mounted just to the right of my radiator. The wiring is the blue/red clip at the top of it, all I did was route the wiring across in front of the fans. The hose I ran under my throttle body and behind the alternator. You will also have to losen and rotate the power steering lines a little bit.

Yea i did actually. The most Ive noticed out of any single one mod thus far. I dropped from 14.7 stock, to 14.3 stock with just the SLP cold air. So figure its worth an honest 20hp or so. It also sounds a little different than most cold air, it dosent make a whistling sounds more like you blowing over a glass bottle kind of. I think you will be happy with it, much better choice than the chrome ebay kits that just suck hot air and look like they cost about 5 bucks at Home Depot to make. Its a shame SLP quit making these!

Nick

Re: SLP Cold Air intake help

The way that there made someone could design one. Like you said it is better than those one's that are sucking in hot air from inside of the engine compartment. I wish I had the template for the SLP Cold Air. But all I should have to do line up the holes on it and drill or make a template for it. My car is in storage until April 3rd. Day after my birthday.

Emissions man! Plus I'm a stickler for originality, I like things to look like they came from the factory even if that means keeping the smog stuff. I havent had one person at the drags call me on the cold air yet, everyone thinks its stock. Although you'd be surprised how many guys ask if its a 305 LOL so I tell'em yea sure is (if they cant read the door thats thier fault). Of course theres not many TPI cars that come to the strip in my area, most are beat to death or have already rusted to the ground... ahh north east Ohio!

Re: SLP Cold Air intake help

Yeah, when I bought my car, the 1st things to go was all the smog things.
I didn't plan on keeping my stock for that long anyway.
Headers, SLP air intake, and now my little 305 is a fun car to drive for what it is. (in my sig.
It's actually getting repainted. (I never had it out last year!!!!)

I also bought a non AC box and installed that last fall. It really looks nice. It really cleans things up.
Thats what I like. Pop the hood....and see all motor, plus keep the TPI. I love the look of the TPI.

Re: SLP Cold Air intake help

The instructions I found on the Summit racing web site said to move the charcoal canister to the drivers side. Although I'm wondering if you need that canister. I think I will follow SLP instructions and keep it and move it to the drivers side.

Re: SLP Cold Air intake help

This may be a dumb question, but where do you relocate the battery with this kit? If i'm not mistaken the airbox is in the stock battery location.

The battery on a firebird is located on the driver side. Camaros have batterys mounted on the passenger side.

yea, i have to say that if i was just a passer-by, id think that box was stock essentially. SLP did a nice job integrating that. i was just writing on another post about the ebay kits. its so worth it to buy some 3 inch intercooler piping and make your own hard pipe kit. i have no doubt the SLP is a great piece, but im kinda a DIY person (btw, makin my own supercharger this year, hope the guys at UTI are impressed this fall ) so anytime i can make something myself and get good numbers with it, i do it. the SC thing may be a flop but well see. need to figure out an oiling system. neway, props on the nice system, and good luck with installing the other one! they look real good!
