MAF to Speed density?
I have an built top to bottom 350 (SD) from a '92 Camaro. (I'll save the details). Currently in my '88 Bird I have a 383 (MAF). The 383 has a built long block, full exhuast, but I don't have the extra $$$$ to get a new intake. I was going to put the 350 into my Elcamino. The 383 completly falls flat above about 5,000 RPMs. I was wondering if it would be worth it to pull the 383 and drop in the 350, then put the 383 into the Elcamino. The Bird has a bunch of suspension parts and handles really well. The Elcamino would be for show, fun and to haul things. This is the short story since I'm at work right now, but if more info is needed, just ask.

Oh wow, you got the Car Craft Formula, huh?
Did they ever do any custom tuning to that engine? Since you're local you can bring the car to me and I'll tune it for you.
A 383 plus a TPI long runner intake isnt going to make power above 5000 rpms. That's the limit of a TPI. You'd need to shorten the runners to get the power up there. See my sticky post "Quest for a better flowing TPI" in the TPI forum to see what happens when we swap a long runner intake for a short runner one.
And there is a tech article describing the process of converting from MAF to MAP. See it in the tech articles section on the main page of this website. Or you can have Dyno Don and myself do the conversion for you.

Re: MAF to Speed density?
Hey Kevin, I guess you don't remember me. When I got this car, I emailed you about sugestions for a motor build. You weren't really too nice, which I thought was unusual since all of the other times that we have talked, you seemed pretty cool. I may also have mistaken trading a speedo sensor from a WCT5 to you for a mechanical one. But that's neither here nor there. So what really started me on this was reading that thread about the better flowing TPI. I really can't see spending that much money on an intake. I have done some research about them and what I've come up with is that the motor won't rev that high with any TPI. Hence, Tuned Port. So for the Elcamino I can see a 383 with no more than 5000 RPMs. And the other motor has the Accel Super Ram on it anyway. How much do you charge. I was thinking about getting some tuning done to the 383 while it's in the Bird anyway. Also, what do you know about 700r4s? I want to dump it and install a T56 like you did. But as everthing, time and money are large constraints.
I have read that Lingenfelter Performance Engineering sells them now, and they even mention not going over 5k, but let me know if I am wrong.
Thanks

i used the c100 pinout diagrams on austin thirdgen.org... the pinouts from the 90-91 sd almost matched the 89 perfectly.... some people say the firebird and camaro c100's are different, but mine matched exactly to what they had listed for a camaro and mine came from a gta....
i am going to go ahead and convert my 90sd to the 89, it's not hard if ya know what ya doing, and take your time, soldering with heat shrink tubing... i have been looking at the factory splices in the harness and they are just crimped, so i know i can do better than that..
good luck though dude! hope ya can get it to work.!

Re: MAF to Speed density?
Thanks, I'm getting all of the info now so when I can actually do the swap, hopefully the setbacks will be minor. Looks like what will happen is that I will change over the current '88 MAF to accept SD and the '92 harness will go into my Elcamino and be changed to MAF. I just wish that the intakes weren't so expensive. I remember a couple of years ago when I was building the 383 the Accel went for about $1000 to $1200 for everything. Now it looks like it runs about $3500 to $4500. That's just insane! I've even tried to find it used with no luck. I may even go crazy and build a 302 that revs up quick, and then the intake should be able to flow enough for it. But I don't have the money to do any kind of testing.

Re: MAF to Speed density?
I'm sorry I dont remember everyone I talk to on email. I remember faces when I meet people at our club meetings. I also apologize for being rude, I dont remember that either.
I went from a T5 to a T56. I dont know about changing transmissions, my dad does that work. Send me an email or PM and we can talk prices.
Where are you seeing $3500 for an Accel? The SuperRam is discontinued but they shouldnt be selling for that much. Are you looking at the whole carb-to-EFI changeover kit, or just the intake manfiold parts?

Re: MAF to Speed density?
The Holley Stealth Ram does not have an EGR in it, so it is not legal for California (or technically anywhere in the US on a street car). However, I have heard of people thinking about trying to adapt the new MiniRam EGR to it. I dont know if anyone has actually done it yet.

Re: MAF to Speed density?
I did a Google search for Accel Super Ram before I read the posting about a better flowing TPI. I came up with posts like this:
http://performanceparts.com/part.php?partID=138595
http://performanceparts.com/part.php?partID=138876
I have seen Accels DFI unit at Summit:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
Yeah, they are for the complete change over, but parts come out like this:
Edelbrock runners:
http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...11175&D=311175
Or the Edelbrock base, and base with runners:
http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...02660&D=302660
Roughly the same for Jegs. I guess since Accel is discontinued, that's why they are so expensive, but I feel even the Edelbrock stuff is a little too overpriced too. I know that the TPI system is less popular than other fuel injection systems, but it's seems to be too expensive. I guess I should look for used manifolds, It's just that I've heard that they have a tendency to warp the upper plates.
But for the transmissions, I'm gonna keep the auto for now, and when I get some money and a place to do it, I'll start working out the details on the T56. But I was asking because the 700 in the bird isn't working as well as I like it to. I'll PM you about the details. Thanks.
