settin the timming.. havin probelms!!
so i got my motor up and runnin again and i need to get it tunned bad! Today i thought i would check the timmin and make sure its set right. i unplugged the connector that your supost to and hooked up the timmin light. I could not find the mark anywhere. so i took some white-out and taped it to the end of a long flat head to reach down there haha got it nice and white and tryed again but still nothin. i can twist the dist both ways tell the motor dies and still cant find the white line...what gives? No matter if the timmin wire sensor thing is un-plugged or plugged i cant find the white line. what am i doin wrong? thanks guys

Did you successfully get any mark on the damper? try goin from the bottom. Also try gettin the light on the other side and see if you can see the mark. Are you using a trashed damper or is it new? after a while the gm ones spin a little and you can't correctly time the motor.

Just a thought of what happened to me before... Had two wires crossed.
Check the order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
Other than that, it almost has to be a spun balancer.

if its a spun balancer is the only way to fix it a new one? ill check the order to make sure the wires are right. i never checked with the light on the bottom but i never could see the mark.
Re: settin the timming.. havin probelms!!
I was saying to mark the balancer from underneath, not aim the timing light down there, sorry for the confusion. and yes you would have to get a new balancer if it spun, Im thinkin you cant see the mark, plug wires are wrong, or you have the light hooked up to the wrong plug wire

ok so this 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2...on the motor im guessin it starts from the front of the motor on the driver side "1" then the front of the motor passenger side "8" the back to the driver side "4" and so on right? so how does it go on the top of the dist cover? i want to make sure they are right befor i diside its a spun balancer.....
Also if it is a bad balancer, how bad are they to replace?

Driver's side front to back is 1-3-5-7, passenger side front to back is 2-4-6-8. On the distributor the firing order (18436572) goes around clockwise.
Rotate the motor so that the number one cylinder is at top dead center of the compression stroke. Then pop off the distributor cap and the rotor should be pointing to the spot on the cap where the #1 wire goes. Check each wire moving clockwise around the distributor and follow each wire making sure it goes to the correct cylinder.
Balancers are not hard to replace but you need a special puller.

Yep...
To add... you want the compression stroke on #1 cylinder which blows air out the spark plug hole until the timing marks line up. At that point the rotor needs to be pointing at the drivers headlight. If you have those two things, make the rotor\cap line up with wire #1 and continue clockwise on that firing order.
