86 tpi wont idle

my car is an 86 iroc with a 305 tpi completely stock it will not idle it just dies. on the road the car runs and drives like a dream. i have done a complete tune up on it and it still will not idle i have to give it throttle just to start it. im out of ideas anything would help thanks. I put in new plug wires new cap and coil. the plugs and rotor only have about 4000 miles on them. i also put a new IAC sensor in today and it still wont stay running. im ready to just yank the engine and start over AGAIN. already did that last spring and really dont want to do it again. sometimes it will stay running in park but as soon as it goes in gear it dies, if pulling up to stop sign real slow it will stay running but on quick stops it'll die. could it possibly be my fuel pump or bad injectors the engine only has around 50,000 on it

Re: 86 tpi wont idle

Have your ignition module checked at autozone, could be the low rpm portion burnt out. Check your tps voltage, cold start valve, coil resistance, and you can reset the idle as well. Jumper your ALDL A and B, turn the ignition on. Wait 30 seconds to allow the IAC to reset itself. DIsconnect IAC. Start engine. Let it get to operating temperature. Using the idle setscrew, adjust the idle to 400 rpms. Shutoff engine. Reconnect IAC. Off you go. Keep in mind, this screw is set from the factory, so I would use it as a last resort.

I had a similar problem under inital startup. I would have to 'feed' the car with the accelerator until it warmed up. One of the tests in the GM manual was to unplug the connection for the mass airflow sensor. The computer uses a default value when this is done and if the car idles fine, the MAF is bad. Easy test too as it took less time to disconnect the sensor and start the car as it did to write this response.

Let us know how you make out.

Re: 86 tpi wont idle

I had this problem on my '86 Trans Am 305 TPI. I could start it by pressing down on the gas slightly and would die if I didn't keep my foot on it a little bit. My problem ended up being the IAC valve. It had broken and the spring loaded plunger was stuck closed.
