What to look for when buying TPI?
I'm going to go with a TPI 350 after I sell my 86 Firebird, which might be tomorrow. So far I'm looking at either an 88 GTA with 72k miles for $3500 or a 91 Z28 with under 100k for $4500 as listed. I'm kinda leaning towards the GTA so far as price goes...
But what should I look for so far as the drivetrain when buying a TPI car? Can I bring my OBDII scanner along with me and scan the computer?
I also looked up numbers for both cars, the GTA makes 15hp less than the Z28, but the Camaro's definitely got the G92 option...but then again the GTA's already got headers installed. Hope mine sells tomorrow.

what good is an OBD2 scanner going to do you. start with letting it warm up completely before anything, make sure it runs at the right temp and doesn't seem to have a problem, you will know if somethings off, TPI cars show symtoms pretty readily of any problems.....I would go with the GTA, the price is right

One thing to consider is that the 91 is a speed density car, while the 88 GTA is a MAF car. The 91 has the dual cats and also the performance axle ratios with possibly rear disk brakes. In all actuality I would go with which car you like most, depending on what style you prefer firebird, or camaro. If you have no preferance, I would go with the 91, despite the lack of headers. Look for signs of intake gasket leaks. It is a common problem with old TPI cars. Also, it might be a good idea to check the fuel pressure. TPI fuel pumps are notorious for going bad and a pain in the behind to replace. A weaker pump will show less FP.
