Lower Intake question....

Hello,
I got a 86 trans am with a tpi set up. I need to replace my lower intake. I got one that was giving to me. The intake is off of a 86 vette. I need to know if this will work on my car. The number off the vettes intake is 14087069 which crosses over to 14087098. I called a dealer but they could only tell me that this is for a vette.

Re: Lower Intake question....

Yes you can use it but I do believe the vettes had no EGR provisions in the manifold so you would have to use an external EGR set up if you need to stay emissions friendly.

Re: Lower Intake question....

The set up for the EGR system is different between the Corvette and F-Bodies.

The F-Bodies get the exhaust flow from the lower intake manifold. The Corvette gets the exhaust flow from the passenger side exhaust manifold (Corvette heads don't have the center exhaust port in the heads). The Corvette manifold also has a coolant passage in the rear of the manifold that the F-Body manifold doesn't have.

It'll bolt up, but it'll take some work to get the EGR system working.

Re: Lower Intake question....

Thanks for the info. Sorry that it has taking so long to get back to ya. With kids and a wife it is hard to do things at time. Is there any type of set up that will make it easy to set up the egr or will I have to wing it?

Re: Lower Intake question....

I think it would really be easier to find an F-body manifold.

If you use the Corvette intake manifold, you'll need the Corvette exhaust manifold (if it'll clear an F-body chassis) and whatever EGR valve and pipes that come on the Corvette.

Attached is a photo of a Corvette exhaust manifold.

Re: Lower Intake question....

You could also take the vortech head egr idea and convert it to work with your setup. Basically you build a riser from your headers to a EGR valve and plumb it into your intake manifold. This option may take some custom fabrication but thats what hotroddings all about.

You need to find out which bolt pattern the Vette intake is machined for. The 85 and early 86 Corvettes had cast-iron heads and ran an exhaust crossover passage. The aluminum head corvettes are the ones that had the external EGR plumbing.

Re: Lower Intake question....

Scroggin Dickey still sells an EGR kit for their high flow lower intake.

For headers drill a vertical hole at the top of the #8 exhaust pipe bend coming out of the exhaust port. Then, test fit the parts, cut riser to size, and weld into hole.

For cast iron headers you may have enough wall thickness to drill and tap for the riser pipe size which you need to thread.

You can all take the metal flex hose setup for V6s and adapt to fit the V8.

I had trouble finding it. Are you sure they still sell it?

As of about 1 month ago they did not. I called them and talked with them. A factory part, used on the corvette had been discontinued and they could no longer get it.

This is the cold hard truth....Here is the part number and NO price. It is GONE!
