New to TPI

Hey guys i just got a 91 convertable vette 6 speed. Pretty sweet i like it. But i have always played with lsx and ford 5.0s and this will be the first TPI i get to play with. got a couple questions about some stuff i saw online, first one was whats the best bang for the buck on the intake? i saw the slp runners are cheap and the help a lot i also read. but do you have to buy a new lower intake with them? or does it all just fit? Also i have searched a few forum sites and cant find anything on a cold air intake kit for an L98, do they not make them and thats why everyone fabricates them? whats the best way to go with that?

lol i know a lot of stuff but thanks for any help

Re: New to TPI

a six speed TPI vette vert!? Im jealous.

Runners are indeed best used with a aftermarket intake, but SLPs should bolt
up to the stock manifold as well. I personally like the AS&M large tube runners
but the SLPS are easier and cheaper to get. As for the CAI, most of the guys
here make them! Id search around as the topic comes up often, and you could
probably get one going for less than 50 bucks id imagine.

Re: New to TPI

haha yeah i got it unexpectedly my uncle just gave it to me for graduation! lol just had to drive 7 hours to pick it up.

but are the runners kind of one of those things that don't do much help unless you swap the lower intake as well? and what about for the long road on heads and cam what would help best?

Re: New to TPI

They are stock, but the AS&M LTR's are very hard to tell apart when on the engine!

I would invest in other areas of the engine before attacking runners, but this calls
for what you want the car to do. For a mild daily driver, a CAI/runner combo is
pretty sweet. Changing cam and heads will require a good tune on a speed density
car. It all depends on what you want the car to do. Id keep your L98 aluminum
heads around, and maybe plan for a cam/tune.. then you can plan for whatever!

Since the question is for a Vette, I hope this thread
doesnt close, lets try to keep it TPI related anyway.

Re: New to TPI

No! Vette's are sweet, but y'know this is a Firebird/Camaro tech board!
We try to help eachother out no matter what though, I dont care.

Exhaust is nice to mod, but intake mods on TPI cars are just minimal payoff
and expensive. You'd get more gain working your L98 heads and tune around
a good cam with an aftermarket TPI base, then attack the runners. HSR
will provide good power, but you have to take advantage of that airflow!

and, its not 50 state street legal, Superram however..

TPiS big mouth bases are nice, but expensive.. pretty much all
of 'em are! You can get bases used, but you know how that story goes.

Re: New to TPI

alright i feel ya. 50 state legal isn't a concern to me, no emission checks in florida. havent had a car with cats or even a smog ever. Bu what i was reading is that the biggest problem with the L98s are the intakes and they are poorly designed, so i figured that would be the first thing i would attack. am i wrong or what?

Re: New to TPI

Yea, if you go HSR/SR that combats the weakness. But, all you
really did was move the powerband up. So, a cam/tune with headwork
would help a great deal.

To get a LTR TPI system to flow better, you have to spend alot
of money on the parts/extrude hone, or learn how to grind/weld machine.

Pick your poison?
