wierd Cold starting issue, Help?

i have an 86 z28 with a tpi 305. cant come up with a reasonable answer to my problem. would like opinions before i start blowing money! when i turn the key to the acc position i can hear the fuel pump turn on, but when i turn to start the car, it dies right away. if i start the car with the throttle slightly open, getting more air, and let it run like that at about 3k for about 10 seconds it runs then idles ok. this never happens when the motor is recently run, or warm. Any ideas would be appriciated. my neighbors are sick of being woken up every morning! cold start injector, fuel filter, and fuel regulator are my three biggest ideas, but why would the car run when it was warm if any of them were bad?

Re: wierd Cold starting issue, Help?

I just installed an '86 TPI system on my Elky, but I eliminated the Cold Start injector and temp switch ( mine was bad, and replacements are hard to find). My car started exactly like yours, which is what I was led to expect. Folks told me I could get by, as long as I didn't mind giving it a little throttle until it warmed up.

You probably have a bad switch, or a bad injector. Either way, it's cheaper to just get a chip programmed for your car eliminating the cold start ( Ebay for $75, or get your own programming stuff and DIY. I did this, and found it to be VERY EASY, once I did a little playing around with the software). The new chip uses all 8 injectors to feed the cold start, and it works great. You can also get a Cold Start delete kit from Ebay ($25) and pull your old injector and line ( they tend to leak over time).
