I recently bought an 88 IROC with a replacement engine possibly from a 91 pickup truck. I completed the install using the iduction setup, injectors, sensors, harness and ECM from the original 305 which was locked up. THe engine is running tolerably but still needs to be dialed in. I just registered the car and have had it out only a couple of times. On a cold start, it fires immediately and settles down to a relatively decent idle. On a hot start, the engine floods immediately and will not start until it is completely cool. The engine does not seem to overheat and the cooling fans work normally. Any suggestions?

 

What induction system did you bolt on?

 

I installed the entire TPI setup (manifold, injectors, runners, plenum, MAF, etc) from the original 305. The EGR plumbing on one manifold was destroyed by the previous owner so I removed it from both sides and plugged the ports. The air pump was also removed. The PCV tubes are intact and all remaining sensors are for the 305, as is the wiring harness and the ECM.

 

Check your coolant temp sensor.
Ohm your injectors. Should be ~ 16ohms
Ohm your cold start injector. Should be ~ 4 ohms.
Have your ignition module checked. It's free at most auto parts stores.
Test your ignition coil.

 

The distributor is new and the coil was replaced with a known good used one. I will have the others checked out.....the temp sensor was on the top of my list. Thanks.

 

Update--Tonight I changed the cooland temp sensor and just for giggles changed the temp sending unit also since the gauge wasn't working. Car fired up right away as usual cold. After a few seconds (it was over 90 here) the rpms dropped down to a nice steady idle. Temp gauge read about 220 after about 5 mins at idle. Took car for a nice run around the neighborhood. Temp got right up to the red, but fluctuated some; I probaby did not get the radiator completely full after reinstalling the sensors. Got home and turned the car off. Tried to start and it fired right up!! No flooding, no hesitation.

I did notice that only one fan was on even though the temp was right up to the red zone, I still need to figure out how the plenum connections pumb into the cooling system and try to find the connection for the Intake Air Temp sensor. I never could find that during the engine install. All challenges for another night.
