I had gotten this advice from tpis on setting the base timing and worked for me.First get the motor hot, shut off motor disconnect the advance connector,start car adjust the timing to where you want it, shut car off disconnect the battery, reconnect the advance wire, wait five minutes reconnect battery and your good to go. If you miss the step of disconnct the battery like i had done it does not clear the memory for base timing out of the computer and will most likely give you a code 42 hope it works for you

Did TPIS explain why the motor needs to be hot? I've never heard this before and never had a problem setting the timing on a cold motor.
