Does this thing have a name and a purpose? If so what and why?

Re: What is this? Picture
I was hoping someone would put that picture on here. I have the same one and was wondering what it was. I want to know what the two ports hook up to. One hooks up to throttle body I know but what does other one hook up to?

Re: What is this? Picture
Please update your profile, we have no idea what type of 3rg Gen you have....Year, TPI, Carb, Auto, ECT....??
The part looks like a EGR Solenoid, one vac hose goes to the EGR valve and the other to the Throttle Body(see below for 1989 TPI)
Due a search on EGR and it should help you.....

Re: What is this? Picture
I have a 1985 tpi Iroc. I deleted my egr valve can I get rid of that part. I have it still plugged in and the line going to the throttle body is on it and hooked up. The other line that goes to egr is not plugged.

Re: What is this? Picture
dude, that part is sweet, shouldnt have to remove it. its required for visual inspection on smog here in cali, unless you checked out by a money grubbing service dude. That solenoid helps out a lot. ONE time i disconnected it. the rpms wouldnt come down after a burn out. that was scary. it pulses the egr valve that allow exhausted gases to enter the cylinders to help bring the rpm down. about 80percent non combustable. id recommend either getting a car without emissions and adding a 572 big block with supercharger to get power. because what i learned from messing with emission and parts stock, is that i 1. get in trouble, 2. could get in an accident from the rpms not coming down, or 3. tinkering with GM engineered engines. Im a good guy, i dont bash on others like the BMW board(gosh what snot heads) and itd cause more problems than fix. heres some link to cheer you up. www.rockauto.com www.free-tv-video-online.info

I'm glad our emissions laws are not strict here in Montana.

Re: What is this? Picture
Hi all,
I really have to reply to this.
The EGR valve is a friend. What does it do? I help lowers the formation of N2O, reduces combustion temperature and slows down the combustion process. Thus pinging of the engine is prevented and the fual is completely burned. If you question do some reserch on the net. I have my EGR still operating on my 82 Bird with 350TPI getting around 27MPG.

Re: What is this? Picture
I was always told to get rid of egr valve. I still get good mileage with mine gone. I have only heard pinging of my engine when my timing was off.

Re: What is this? Picture
As stated above with the wonderful diagram, it is the EGR vacuum control solenoid.
The EGR valve only opens at part throttle cruise at idle and WOT it is closed. It does not improve nor hurt fuel economy, it runs the exhaust through the combustion process again attemting to burn any unburnt fuel that makes it to the exhaust to emmision output. The best power gain from removing the EGR is the weight removal. Removing it from a stock ECU car actually pisses the computer off and keeps you in open loop so you get worse MPG anyway.

Re: What is this? Picture
There is alot of misinformation in this thread... For the sake of people in the future who may find this thread by searching.
The EGR valve or, Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve is applied by the computer to introduce inert exhaust gasses to the combustion process. This inert gas, by nature can no longer be used by the combustion process. Therefore it acts as a buffer. It partially fills the cylinder, along with the fuel and air mixture to bring down cylinder temperature to reduce the formation of the greenhouse gas NOx. In addition to this, it only functions when decelerating. So any claims to adverse performance is totally absurd unless the valve itself is faulty. -Bob

Re: What is this? Picture
There is more information in this whole post than can be captured in an entire novel. Even the correction post has at least one error, the EGR does not operate only under decel. Do a scan and take a look when the EGR is commanded.
Error two: NOx is not just one gas. NOx is to designate the various NO compounds formed during combustion.

Re: What is this? Picture
Yes madmax, NOx is not a "gas", it is a compound of gasses. Oxides of nitrogen. Semantics. Correction 1.
As for the EGR application. Are you saying that the EGR is commanded during accelleration? If so, this would cause a driveability concern and cause the engine to stumble. -Bob

Re: What is this? Picture
On OBD2 PCM/ECM, the EGR is infact open during acceleration. It is closed at idle. I can not verify it one way or the other at WOT.
It also does help on MPG. Depending upon your use and driving style, you may or may not notice, and how much.
