But thats what I dont understand. I pulled it off a FIREBIRD not a CAMARO. I thought the same thing until I looked at the car. it was a bird. Kinda looked like they had cut the thin sheet metal near the hood latch and dropped it in there.

Use a Pontiac adjustment tool to make it fit properly. "hammer"

Why go through all the trouble to mount that restrictive thing?

On a 3.1L V6 you think a little warm underhood air is the only reason your car doesn't go fast?
Firebirds/Trans Ams never had that intake system on them from the factory. The hoodline on a FB/TA is too low in the front to leave enough room above the radiator support for it. Somebody made it fit before you swiped it off.
The factory intake from a 91/92 V6 is plenty good, with minor modification. Pop the rivets that hold the plastic intake "nose" on the filter housing can and the hole underneath it is plenty big, and easy to attach a cold air hose onto, if you want. Then run it forward or down to pick up colder outside air. K&N makes a filter that fits it as well.
If you look at that plastic "nose" on the factory filter housing you'll see it's necked down so small you could barely drop a quarter through it. And when I pulled it off, I found out why- it acts as an intake silencer. Noticably more intake howl with it removed. But clearly it would be easier for the air to get into the filter housing with it removed.

I would think the stock V-6 air intake system would be sufficient for a 6 banger and it gets cool air just as well as in front of the radiator. Besides doubt that V-6 will benefit any from all the work.
