Loss of power and blinking SES light.

I have an 89 L98, I had an after market chip burned and installed (tbichips.com) and now it has started running odd. The ses light blinks and I have an extreme loss of power (also smells like it is running vvvveeerrrrrryyyy rich), the more odd part about it is that it only does this when it gets above 30 degrees outside. She runs fine at 20 and 10 degrees, but any warmer outside and it acts up. (coolant temp doesn't seem to affect it any) I am completely confused on this one, I was thinking that it may be my coil? Any thoughts? thanks!

Re: Loss of power and blinking SES light.

sounds like you are getting too much fuel, maybe a mistune with the injectors? do you have stock injectors?

Re: Loss of power and blinking SES light.

I have the factory injectors. If it was that would it only do that when it is warmer out?

Re: Loss of power and blinking SES light.

injectors do act differently when they are hot or cold. Try taking the ohm resistance when the injectors and car are warm/hot. The ohm resistance should be above or around 12 (I think). Your systoms sound like the car is running rich, specially the bogging down and the smell of unburnt fuel. And also check to see what codes you are getting...

Re: Loss of power and blinking SES light.

I guess I should have explained this a little better. The car runs perfect when it is 20 degrees and colder OUTSIDE, and the car is all warmed up at warmest operating temp. When it is above 30 degrees OUTSIDE the car will act up, when the engine is at any temp. It usually just turns over and is already running messed up. The ses starts blinking and doesn't throw any codes when I check it (outside of code 12) I don't think the injectors are the problem since the engine runs fine when it is really cold out.

Re: Loss of power and blinking SES light.

ok, if its not the injectors, then it could be one of the sensors... A bad sensor would trigger a SES light, but besides air intake temp sensor, I don't think any other sensor would be affected by the atmosphere temp... Do you still have the coolant temp under the tpi plenum or have you switched to the "birdcage" type?

Re: Loss of power and blinking SES light.

My coolant temp sensor is on the front of the intake under the throttle body.

Re: Loss of power and blinking SES light.

If the SES light is flashing the the prom is installed wrong or the wrong prom for you ecm. I once bought a TBIchips prom of ebay for my 90 TBI conversion and it did same thing you are talking about.

Stick you stock prom back in and it should run fine.

Re: Loss of power and blinking SES light.

That was another thought I had, but I had VATS deleted since it was a wapped engine, so if I take out the chip and just run stock, It won't start.

Re: Loss of power and blinking SES light.

If my chip was bad, would the outside temp have this effect on it?
