VSS sensor question!?

I have a 1990 camaro with TBI and I am installing a TPI setup off of an 1989 Pontiac trans-am. Will I be able to use the VSS thats on my car already? Or do i need a different one? Thank You

Re: VSS sensor question!?

I assume you are swapping entire 89 wiring harness/ecm? I think the TBI cars use the same type VSS and buffer box as the 86-89 TPI MAF cars (165 ecm) so it should all still work just fine with the new ECM

Re: VSS sensor question!?

the whole harness ecm and everything is being swapped out, i know the VSS is important because tpi relies on a lot of readings from it, so just trying to be sure

Re: VSS sensor question!?

well the 165 ecm uses a buffer box to handle the VSS signal. That buffer box thingy is under the passenger side dash next to where the computer would be and i think its yellow. It takes the VSS signal and converts it to the right signal that the ecm and speedo can use. If you have one and you should being a TBI car i do believe, all you need to do is make sure the outputs of the VSS gets pinned into the 165 ecm in the right location. Then it will read just fine

The 88-92 TBI's are listed as using the same 2000 pulse / mile VSS unit as the 85-89 TPI's whereas the 90 -92 TPI's had the 4000 pulse

All TBI cars got them. If your speedo works at all, you will have it

Re: VSS sensor question!?

Quick question off this topic: My car is 92 5.0L TBI which has been converted using a TPI and computer from an 87. My VSS just died, which kind do I need to get to replace it?
