#5 glowing after short drive

I just bought an 88 forumla with a tpi 350. When I first got it, it ran smooth but wouldn't shift out of 1st. Luckily a new governor gear fixed that. But when I took it on a short drive to test the trans, it had a miss at times and would pop through the intake under heavy throttle. I got home and popped the hood to see that the manifold was glowing at cylinder 5. Since I just got the car, I don't know much about whats been done other than MSD, roller rockers, hypertech chip, and possibly a cam. I am showing a code 24 but that doesn't seem relevant. Any ideas on where to start looking?

Re: #5 glowing after short drive

#5 is glowing because unburned fuel is passing through the exhaust manifold. i would start with a compression test on all cylinders.

Re: #5 glowing after short drive

These TPI systems will do what's called "Lean Pop". It happens when you open the throttle. Pops through the intake. I'd bet you have a bad fuel injector. Do an ohm check on each injector on that side of the engine.

And welcome to TGO!

Re: #5 glowing after short drive

sounds like a clogged fuel injector causing it to run very very lean on that one cylinder.

Dont drive it long. Swap the injector with one from another cylinder and then see if the problem changes to the cylinder you swapped it to. If it does, order all new injectors or have them flushed/cleaned.

Re: #5 glowing after short drive

I made some progress today. I figured I'd start with basics and I found that the plug wires were crossed between 4 & 6. That straightened out the miss. During the road test, it still popped a couple times but the manifold was not glowing. When I got back home it would not stay running. Turns out, I was nearly out of gas, which explains the popping. I'll get some gas tomorrow so i can test drive a little longer and I'll report back. Just doesn't make sense that crossed wires would affect the oposite bank as much as it did.
