Rough running 5.0 TPI (backfires too)
Okay... took an engine from an 87 Iroc and put it into an 88 GTA.
have had to do some wire jumpering to get the fuel pump to run, the injectors to work , the alternator to charge and the cooling fans to work. All additional wires are coming from where they were supposed to... the model year difference is what caused this.
the car runs, it can be driven and sometimes it runs really good, but these are short bursts, the balance of the time it's running pretty rough.
I think it might be the MAFS but I'm really a novice at TPI.
Here are the ECM codes it's putting out right now.

Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks In advance,
Robert

one additional thing I noticed... while pulling the ECM codes, my cooling fan or fans (I didn't look) were running...

Tuning is the first thing that came to mind when I read your situation, and all those codes together could pertain to a tuning issue. Are you using the correct PROM for the engine you're using?
The ECM was the same from '86-'89, so one from any of those model-years would interchange with an engine from any of those model-years, making no difference which one you use.
The MAF was also the same from year-to-year, so it would be completely interchangeable too, making no difference either.
Of course, it's always possible that a MAF or ECM is bad, a MAF more likely than an ECM.
Wiring harnesses will have some big differences between '87- cars and '88+ cars, but can always be made to work, as I think you've already discovered.
But... engines were different from year-to-year, so the 'tune' you're getting from the PROM inside the ECM will make all the difference. So it's important to be sure you're using the correct PROM for the engine you're using.
In your other (very long) topic thread about your swap, you mentioned a few different model-years and some mixing and matching, but I don't recall seeing any mention of the PROM, itself. That's your 'tune.' And for optimal performance, it MUST match(presuming all is stock, that is).

What about vacumn? My first step is to plug all none engine vacumn lines. there is a leak at the heater control.

Re: Rough running 5.0 TPI (backfires too)
I feel like a real idiot... in yellow junk yard ink, written on the MAFS was 85 Camaro. I read that 100 times as I'd stick my head under the hood... and I knew that the computer is different from 85 to 87. So I call the parts store, had them cross reference the MAFS that I had and sure enough it was for an 85. Got the correct one and now it's running much better.
the codes also pointed out my MASF power relay was bad so I replaced that too.
Seems to be running much much better now... Now I can get down to tuning...
