changed thermostat and slowed down car WHY!!!!!!!

have a 90 iroc 350tpi car always ran close to being to warm with the factory thermostat....... car ran 8.90s and 9.00s consistant wether cool or hot......

i just put in a 160 thermostat and it ran 9.00 on first pass with engine cold,,,,, 9.36 warming up and 9.60 at operating temp........

no its not spinning and trannys not slipping as i rolled in the gas it feels like its not getttin all the fuel it does when cold

i let it cool down for an hour and ran the same times

Re: changed thermostat and slowed down car WHY!!!!!!!

well unless you have a custom chip for your car to run a 160 degree thermostat, then I suggest you try a 180 degree thermostat... most posts that I have read when it comes to thermostats have had poor results with 160 thermostats.... I think it has something to do with the ECM running in open loop... I had trouble with my Formula when I ran a 160, as well as when I ran a 190 degree thermostat... 180 degree thermostat was the sweet spot... I have a hypertech chip, which I believe called for a 180 thermostat... it's been so long I don't remember...

160 is too cold, step back up to a stock one.

Re: changed thermostat and slowed down car WHY!!!!!!!

+1 on the warmer thermostat. My Iroc has been on the rollers 3 times in the last 6 months. We know that currently it makes the best HP around 175. If you had a 170 that would work OK. A 180 would work well too. I'm not sure about the 190. My car does have a Custom (not off the shelf) chip in it. It is programed for a slightly cooler thermo than a 190. When the car is Cold say below 170 it just doesn't run as well.
