What Is This Little Metal Rod on Engine? (Pictures) (305 TPI A/T)
Hello All,
(1990 Camaro Z28 - 305 TPI - Auto Tranny)
I noticed my cruise control vacuum line (to the engine) was disconnected and sitting beside my distributor. I began searching around my engine to see where it connects to and came across a little metal rod sticking out of my engine (on the top plenum). I have no clue what it is or why it's there. I am not sure if it should be plugged, or something connected to it, or what it's purpose is. I figured I'd ask the experts (you guys) and see what it actually did or was there for.
It is on top of the engine (the drivers side), right on the intake plenum (I believe that's what it is). It is about 1-2 inches long and looks like it bolts on. It also has an opening in the end. I have included some pictures to help pinpoint its location/description.
If anyone would be kind to let me know what this rod actually DOES or what it is there for (if anything) it would be GREATLY appreciated.
Apologies for the image quality (cell phone camera)...
Thanks so much.

There's supposed to be a plastic guide on that post that holds your throttle cable, and the cable for cruise control if you have that also!!
You seem to have a piece missing!!

Check your throttle, and cruise control cables and see if the plastic piece is still attached somewhere's along them!!

Thank you for your quick response!
It appears that the previous owner must have broken or lost that piece all together, as it's no where to be found!
Regardless, at least I now know it is nothing too important (or so I would assume).
I still cannot find for the life of me where the cruise control to engine vacuum line goes though!
It appears to wrap around by my distributor but I have had no luck finding a vacuum diagram for my specific engine (1990 305 TPI) which also includes the curise control - engine vacuum line.
I may need to start a new thread for that one... in search of somone with the same engine/year.
Thank you once again for your speedy and informative response!
Greatly appreciated!

Yeah, it's nothing to worry about. There's supposed to be a wire loom on it for holding down the throttle cables that are passing over it. It's probably been broken-off for years.

Oh, and if you're still wondering where your cruise vacuum hose connects, it goes almost right where it's laying...
You said it's wrapped around your distributor. It does go behind the distributor to get where it's supposed to connect, which is at the bottom/rear of the air plenum on the passenger side. There should be a nipple for it, that, if nothing is connected to it, is giving you a nice vacuum leak. Or if the hose was removed intentionally, the nipple might be capped.

The HVAC and the cruise connect to one of the 2 vacuum ports on the passenger side of the plenum through a check valve tee'd to the vacuum reservoir tank (plastic ball.)
There should be plenty of diagrams on this site, or just do an image search on google.
