looking to modify my 5.7...advice anyone??

hey guys i have a bone stock 87 GTA and looking to make some modifications in the very near future but dont really know where to start. im about to purchase a new 52mm throttle body since im told the stock one is very restrictive. anyone know who makes a good TB for a decent price? i also am getting a ram air box with kn filter with a ram air II hood. what should i do next?? i plan to put a mild cam in it but dont want to get too radical with it because itll still be my daily driver to work but also want it to be a pretty quick street rod at the same time. any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of mods?
BBK makes a 52MM TB.
If you want to do simple mods, you can do under drive pullies, the TB, TB bypass, headers, exhaust, 1.6 roller rockers, larger runners, ported plenum, ported intake manifold, bigger injectors, adjustable fuel pressure regulator and an ECM tune.

one of them zz4 cam would work well , intake , headers, 3in cat back bigger TB will help. And stepping up to 1.6 rockers just make sure the push rod doesn't rub the inside of hole in the head. Or for a few bucks you could run Nos then its only fast with the bottle

I heard the Holley Stealth Ram Intake was non-emissions compatible? Someone mentioned to me that if you have one of those in your car & go to take a safety test for example and if the mechanic sees it he can fail you. Again, I'm not sure if it's true, but it's worth thinking about before replacing something as important & big as a intake manifold.

What kind of power did you get from that aftermarket part? I am in Missouri, here if you have one I think they might fail you. But again, I could be wrong.

You never took it for a dyno? I think the Holley Stealth gives an increase of 50HP & 50ft. of torque.

You can get a Street & Performance Spacer & a Hypertech Air Charger. All in total it'll run about $160-$180 for both bolt-on's & it does increase power for sure. I know because I run with them on my ride.

I do want to warn you though, there are alot of liars out there & alot of knock off pieces of crap products so do your due diligence before purchasing anything. The 2 items I mentioned to you are legit & aren't crap. Good luck.

It cost me $100 to do 3 runs last summer.

I agree, name brand is important. But sometimes there are brands that are new to the market that haven't been out long so those are worth looking into as well. The biggest names cost alot more money. TPIS also has an article that talks about alot of good parts to gain boost (HP) & torque. The book is for 3rd Gen. Camaro's/Firebird's.

save your money and pass on throttle body. get a free flowing exhaust, headers, cat and catback, and a tune up is always a good

Don't forget a cam, filters, upgrade your suspension & improve the chassis. It's not just performance that should matter, you should also improve on the strength of your car & it's nice to get some better gas mileage, even if it's a 1-2mpg gain. You can throw a whole mess of bolt on's on & the cam, CAI, headers, pulley kit, exhaust & get good gains. Our cars, the 350's which is in the GTA I believe, are capable of 400-420HP N/A.

What's the point of having alot of power if you're not going to be safe with it or not get some better gas mileage?

Re: looking to modify my 5.7...advice anyone??

I would buy/build a cold-air induction instead of the "ram-air" hood/intake. Then I would uncork the exhaust with a set of headers, high-flo cat and cat-back. Lastly, I would get a tune...preferably on a dyno. JMO...YRMV.

You'll get nothing noticeable from just a throttle body alone, like others here have said start with the exhaust.

Re: looking to modify my 5.7...advice anyone??

I did tpis big mouth slp runners 2460 headers cai air foil. And honestly my car goes well, but not like i expected. The intake is fully ported too.

Thinking about doing a cam. What cam would get me into the 300-325 rwhp range with stock heads, possibly with a little work done to them.
Sorry if im jacking this thread, but i think this will benefit the thread starter too.

Re: looking to modify my 5.7...advice anyone??

The throttle body is not restricting your engine. Getting headers with a high flow cat and exhaust will also make a noticeable difference. After that I would look at a streetable cam and tuning.
