I'am thinking of going to a MAF TPI set up . I have the TPI already in place with a KN filter on the TB. The problem is mounting the MAF is their a rule of thumb as to how far from the TB the MAF can be and how many bends ?

Re: Maf Location

Not really, but there is a lag time with air flow from maf to cylinders, so the farther awy it is, the longer that lag time is. stock on my firebird is like 18 inches I think? maybe 12.

Re: Maf Location

Never thought about the lag time makes sense . Most of the set up's i have seen also the MAF has been close to 12" from the TB . Thanks gives me alittle more to think about .

Re: Maf Location

Is it ok to place a cone filter on the end of the maf, as opposed to using the ram air?

If you want the engine to breathe nothing but hot air (the hotter the air = less oxygen in it) increase internal temps (by starting with hot air already) & reducing performance potential....

Then yeah. Toss your filter directly on to the throttle body (and can only work on a MAP car) A MAF car has to have the MAF sensor somewhere between the filter & throttle body. It'll run, just not as good as it could.

Re: Maf Location

my book says no more than 15" from TB, and that ou get problems when you put the filter right on the maf, cuz it gives an uneven reading... you need a small amt of pipe(or more) before the MAF to smooth out the air...

Re: Maf Location

I took some measurments and i will be around 8" to 10" from the TB using one 90 degree bend at the TB . Will be using some rubber intake hose along with aluminum pipe to make a CAI , work in progress .

Re: Maf Location

Im about to build the same set up tomorrow. I will use rubber coupler from the throttle body to the 90 deg albow to another rubber coupler to the mass airflow sensor another rubber coupler to an aluminum tube to the K&n cone style filter. I will have the filter placed on the passenger side in front of the wheel well where the batt use to be. I will build a box with a seal at the top edge to seal it to the under side of the hood. I will also cut an openong in the bottom of the old batt tray and build an air scoop to direct the air directly to the filter. I will post a pic here tomorrow if you dont mind..

Re: Maf Location

Now that i have a distance from the TB to the MAF . It now leads into another question or questions should the MAF be mounted solid or should it be left alone clamped to the hose . Just after the filter gonna use a hump hose then some alum pipe then another hump hose just before the MAF for flex , would this be enough flex for the motor . Pictures are always nice an once my parts arrive i will post them also .

Re: Maf Location

what I'm gonna do is where the fan shroud was, bolt the MAF into oneof those holes and drill one more, so I can have the maf solid and put a hump hose in the engine side before the 3" reducer. I'll post a mock up pic tomorrow...

Re: Maf Location

Yup was thinking bout the same stuff during the winter 3-4 inches at least between maf n filter. Good to know that I should maybe move my maf closer, will have to measure it.

Changing out the metal tubes cause plastic is a better heat barrior and cleaning my maf cause of the oiled air filter.
