Wanted to say hello, and get advice

Hey everyone, my name is David. I am 26 years old and live in central MN. I bought my 1985 Iroc-z back when I was 14 years old. It has been sitting in the shed for probably the last 5 years. The other day, I was talking about "the old days" with a buddy and i realized that I have very few memories from back then that dont involve my beloved red camaro. I was inspired to drag it out and get in re-done....nothing crazy, just want to make it look new--like it was when i got it. Its a 305 TPI, auto tranny, torch red, t-top, gray interior, silver package car. It is still rust free, but has went severely down hill from sitting for so long. The paint looks terrible, the interior is faded heavily from the years it spent outside, it leaks out of most seals, etc. I worked as a mechanic through high school and college but have been away from it for a few years now. So i drug it out, put a fuel pump(it was not working) and fresh gas in it, and it started like it has never been sitting.....it then ran for a few seconds and died on me. It starts good, then spits and sputters but will stay running if i play with the pedal. Check engine light on sometimes but no codes present when i flashed it. Played around for a while and discovered that it runs way way better if i leave the MAF unplugged...a little hesitation but runs well. My question is....is it possible its other sensors throwing the MAF off, or is it most likely the MAF. As most of you probably know, it is a one year only MAF and is spendy. I hate to go spend $200-$300 and find out that its not the problem. I also heard something about some $300 burn off valve or something for the MAF. Any advice on alternatives, cheaper parts, or anything is appreciated. It is going to the body shop as soon as i get it running decent. But i am on a somewhat tight budget these days and would like to get by as cheap as possible. I also want to remove all the smog stuff....hopefully that wont hurt anything. thanks

start with the relays....there is a MAF Power relay and a MAF burn off relay on the driver side firewall. also in some cars there is a 2nd MAF relay located on the Passenger side of the radiator. some cars have it, some don't. make sure you buy the correct relays. while all three look the same on the outside they are not the same on the inside....start there and then work your way to the MAF...check the wiring in the MAF harness as well

I dont know how to help you with the car not running but I can tell you that I regret ever taking my smoq equipment off. I noticed no difference in performance and all I gained was a little more room to easily reach things in my engine bay. Remember you have to get your prom reprogrammed and that either takes time or money and most likely both and all you get is a car that smells at stoplights. Plus I think emissions equipment makes the engine look modern and not just an old SBC.
