Valve Adustment Procedures?

What are the correct valve adjustment procedures on a 1986 305 tpi engine?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Ive searched and found some into on this.
I found some before but I cant seem to find some covers to go over the rockers to keep from squirting oil up while adjusting the valves.
anyone seen these??

Re: Valve Adustment Procedures?

There are a few ways to do it. Easiest is to put each cylinder at TDC, one at a time, and adjust the lash out there. Start it up with oil restrictors on the rockers, and finish with it running. If you have never done it before, get someone to show you before you try it. Too tight and a valve could strike a piston. That would be a bad thing. Play it safe and get it done by someone that knows, and watch.

I never done it defore and when I tried, it wasnt hard at all. All you got to do is go to a junkyard and get an old valve cover of a GM vehicle. Now go home and cut out a long slender section that runs from on end of the rocker studs, down to the other one. Now get some 1/4" tubing - 1/2" (about 4 feet). Now turn the crank over and tighten each rocker as soon as its valve closes. Check for valve lash. with your index and thumb turn the push rod while tightening the nut. Once you feel resistance on the push rod, give the wrench 3/4 of a turn. you have now somewhat gotten the correct rocker setting. Do this to as intake and exaust valvres. Now once both sides have been adjusted, remove one regular cover and put in the new modified cover. Turn on Camaro and have one end of the tube right at the pushrod and the other next to your ear. (Have a buddy help you loosen or tighten the bolts while you listen for the tap). Have your frind loosen the nut until you hear an obvious tap. The tap will be hard to hear if all other valves are tapping but it will work, just dont get discouraged if you hear many loud tapping noises. Anyways, listen for the tap. Tell your buddy to loosen the nut if there is no tapping. Once you hear the tapping, tell your buddy to slowly tighten the nut and I mean slowly. Now once the tap is gone, Immediately signal your buddy to stop. Then have him turn the nut 3/4 of a turn. You have now adjusted one of the 16 valves. Good luck bro.

Here is a clip of the valve cover with the modiefied cut in it. also you'll hear the famous pushrod tap and the 3/4 turn. It's easy bro, believe me, easy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSR36fmBR6M

You can also use a clean rag and lay them all accross the rockers to deflect the oil back into the head. Or you can spare some change and buy these oil deflectors ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...d=350362657926 ).

Also, once you begin to adjust the lash, the engines idle will begin to fluctuate. This is completely normal during valve adjustment so dont get nervous. Peace.
