No start after reinstalling dist/intake
Like the title says. It did back fire out the intake so I thought it was possible the dist was backwards. So I had my wife crank the engine while i checked for compression on the #1 cylinder. When I felt compression I put the timing mark to 0 and checked the rotor. It was pointing at #1, 5 oclock position on the distributer. That should mean the distributer is not off correct? Or could it still be backwards?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: No start after reinstalling dist/intake
So I tried to start it again tonight and again it backfired out the intake With the distributor installed as described in the previous post there is no way it can be 180 off right?
Any ideas on what else I should be looking at that would cause a no start issue or backfire out the intake when it does try and start? IAC have any effect on this?
Funny thing is before I pulled the intake the car pretty much insta started as soon as I cranked it and it had been sitting for almost a year.
Edit: If anyone can verify that the distributor is installed correctly with the info in the original post it would be greatly appreciated as I can start hunting for other causes. (if the dist was 180 off the rotor would be pointing approximately to 11 o'clock at tdc right?)

Re: No start after reinstalling dist/intake
After messing with if for 12+ hours today and still no start
I'm going to pull the distributer tomorrow and rotate it 180 even though I am 99% sure it is in the right way now. Just don't know what else to try.

Re: No start after reinstalling dist/intake
you need to set it top dead center FOR SURE turn it and feel compression, if the rotor is not on cylinder 1 i need to turn the oil pump so that the dist seats with the rotor pointing the right direction, to do that u need to modify a distributor shaft by grinding out the gears that way ull be able to turn the oil pump, also remember #1 spark wire should be pointing #1 cylinder as well

Re: No start after reinstalling dist/intake
I decided not to wait till tomorrow and pulled the distributer and rotated the rotor 180. Reinstalled everything and....No start and backfire. Put the motor at TDC (balancer at zero with air blowing out #1) checked the rotor and it was pointing at #6.
So I had it in the right way the first time and am back where I started.
Really starting to think it could be the IAC.

thats why u really need the modified distributor shaft to turn the oil pump and set the rotor at #1

Re: No start after reinstalling dist/intake
With the no1 cylinder at tdc you should have the oil pump shaft pointing at number 5 intake valve so take of your valve covers and make it so,this you can fix with a long screwdriver.
Then insert the dist a little bit earlier so it rotates into the no 1 spot to land exactly at no 1 vire at the dist cover this should be easy, this will give you a very close hit to make the engine start.

Re: No start after reinstalling dist/intake
The oil pump was in the proper position. I just used a long screw driver. If the oil pump was not in the right spot then the distributer wouldn't sit flush on the intake right?

Re: No start after reinstalling dist/intake
that is correct, the oil pump shaft fits on to the roll pin in the dist shaft, otherwise it would not sit flush.
sounds like your dist is dead on, you need to make sure the ignition wires are not crossed.

Re: No start after reinstalling dist/intake
Changed the plugs and ignition module and it fired up for me finally. To bad the engine is toast When its warm and at idle it has zero oil pressure. The oil pressure goes up rpms though. Could be a bad sending unit I guess but it looks like its blowing blue smoke out the exhaust but it also smells very rich lol.
