which knock sensor for the TPI?
so, i finally found the codes etc and decided to replace the knock sensor. problem is, im not too sure which one to buy. ive searched and found out that there are a difference between KS and that they differ from 89 and below and 90 and above. but it doesnt say why. is it because of the MAF and MAP?
my problem is, i have an '89 pontiac 5.7 setup in my '91 camaro. yes the 89 HAD a maf but now that its in my '91 it is a map- speed density. so im confused, would the KS recognize the motor for it being an 89 or 91?
i just wanted to check, i dont want to buy the wrong one, mount it and then find out that i picked out the wrong one...thanks for the help
ppl.

It is a matter of the computer recognizing the correct KS ; not other way around ( recall there are different KS resistance values between MAP and MAF KS )
You need the one that is correct for the computer type you are using and engine size, They differ between 305 and 350.

then again, either option seems wrong. but im trying to do the best suitable set up.'
i wouldnt want to get a 350 prom and then have to buy a 350 KS. i understand that you need the right one for the right computer set up, but why on tpiparts do they have you choose between 90-92 and 89 and below? still not sure to even know which one to go since my swap and set up is weird..

Because with the computer change from MAF to MAP they changed the spark control setup .The MAF cars have a external spark control module and the MAP cars have the module as part of the chip in the computer .In 90, GM switched to a 3.9k Ohm KS as opposed to the old style 100 Ohm one.

Re: which knock sensor for the TPI?
thanks for the help guys...i also forgot to mention that i have a v6 ecm shell...and a 305 chip. will this make a difference also? im just asking because you mentioned that the computer runs off the KS that you use.
i think ill get a 350 KS and run it like that and either buy a 350 prom or get a tune. i looked it up on tpiparts and the chip is like 400 bucks. jeezus thats a lotta money.
so whatevers cheaper, a tune or the chip...

If you want it to run properly you should have a 350 tune/ chip and a 350 KS
$150

And you can get VATS taken out , fan temps changed , anything else you want done at same time

Re: which knock sensor for the TPI?
true, and thats what i want it to do, run right! lol. the swap was only half the work..now is getting it all torun right. it jus goes to show that people are right when they say you can put bolt-on's galore but it run worth a crap unless its tuned.
so with that being said, 350 prom, 350 KS, 350 engine..
thats awesome, and sure beats the 400 dollar price tag @ tpiparts. thats cool ill just order one up and have the VATS removed (since i think it already was flashed when the swap was done) and hopefully itll run real good, ive heard bad things about custom order'd chips, but i think that since im mostly stock (besides a full exhaust) ill be good to go...at least better than now.
thanks a mill vetteoz! and twin turbo!
