ok gurus, code 44

been fighting this code for a while blindly. found a shop today that has a scanner. we put the car on the scanner and it was running fine for a minute after cranking. the o2 was alternating like it should. all of a sudden, the o2 goes solid lean and the voltage starts dropping off. the car started missing at this point. we put a fuel pressure gauge on the car and it held solid 38 to 40 and increased with the rpm's. did a bleed off on the fuel rail with the car running and the pressure went to 3 or 4 lbs with not much fuel coming out of the bleed line. everything has been done to this car but a new pump. it has to be the pump. unhooked the o2 sensor and the car ran fine in limp mode. fuel pressure was still good, but volume was bad. any takers that's the problem?

Re: ok gurus, code 44

Does this car have headers or the stock manifold? If it has headers, try swapping in a 3-wire O2 sensor.

no headers, stock configuration. we watched the o2 sensoer drop out on the screen. it was alternating back and forth as it should, then the car stated missing and it went solid lean on the screen.

Re: ok gurus, code 44

Might change the fuel filter first. If it improves for a while the pump may be bad. But with good pressure I'd think the pump is not the problem here. An O2 sensor is not a lot of money, might be time for a new one?

Re: ok gurus, code 44

new o2 probe last week. put the filter on it just before we hooked up the scanner. two things it could be. 1- the ecm is bad or2- it's the pump. pump had pressure, just not much volume

Re: ok gurus, code 44

o2 wire is good to the ecm. it sees it on the scanner. it takes about a minute or two for the car to start missing. it does it when it is bone cold too. will still be in open loop and do it. can't be the exhaust side. has to be a fueling issue. o2 sensor is not eeven in the picture in open loop

Re: ok gurus, code 44

Have you tried checking the sock on the fuel pump. That's what happened to my '92 a while back.

Re: ok gurus, code 44

we're gonna pull it after the fourth. might as well put in a new one while we have it out. i think it might be the original pump. it's on an 86 model.

Re: ok gurus, code 44

i had to splice some wires going to the mass air flow sensor. gonna go back over those again. gotta try all angles before i drop the tank. wiggled them aroung some and the car briefly idled better. worth another look.

Re: ok gurus, code 44

If I remember correctly the MAF can be unplugged completely and the ECM will work around it and the car should run ok. Might be worth a try.
