How do you set up an adjustable fuel pressure regulator ?

I just replaced my egr valve and while I was in there installed an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. All the instructions told me was to set it between 40-46 psi. I set it at 46 while the car was running and it now runs horrible. it dies after less then a mile. It's kind of hard to explain. It's like when I'm just trying to drive at cruising speed it hardly wants to move and surges all jerky. Then if I put my foot into it, it will go for a second and then fall on it's face, or just die.
Any ideas ?

try up or down in 2 pound incaments with fuel pressure. once you find the correct PSI back out 2 pounds. Then see how it runs.
