compressions check help

i have a tpi on an engine stand and need to check the compression to determine if i need to rebuild it but i dont know how to do that. my idea is to hook a battery up to the starter for a few seconds but there will be no oil running through it at that time so im hesitant to do that, will it damage the motor and if so how badly

Re: compressions check help

Yea personally I wouldnt do it if it has no oil in it. Why not just fill it up with oil? Other than that as long as you generally know how to do a compression test sounds like you have the right idea.

Re: compressions check help

Well i don't know how they are cut off so i cant recommend anything specific but I'm sure you could work out some sort of a hose just to bypass the two ends together. I mean clearly it doesn't have to be anything nice for long term use but just something to get you through the test,

Re: compressions check help

ok well i cant find the specific year it just tells me 87 and up the block cast number is 14093638 which is 86-94, then my head cast number is 14101083 which is 87 and up, i want to find the exact year or does it not matter and there is no engine suffix code in front of the passenger side head
