89 IROC TPI HELP!!!

I have seached high and low on here, Alot of same problems, but no help. My problem is pretty common on the other posts. car starts and runs ok when cold. once it warms up into operating range, starts to stumble and die. acts like it is loading up. I have replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, cap, rotor, ign. mod., temp sensor, air intake sensor, maf, fuel pump relay, and injectors. plugs and wires are ok. Its driving me crazy. When it gets hot and acts up, it will idle very rough, and up and down between 800- 1000 rpm. any attempt to throttle up results in a flooding out symptom, and dies. does not want to restart, when it does runs the same way. Let sit and cool down, runs fine. I gutted the cat because it was turning cherry red. Acts as if its running too rich when hot. misses bad before dying almost as if in a limp mode. I really want to keep my TPI, but am very close to swapping over to carb. any ideas? When I got the car, Fuel pressure reg. diaphram was ruptured shooting gas strait into plenum and into cyl. replaced diaphram. ran fine for about a week. then started this. car set for at least a year prior to my purchase. please any help would be great.

Re: 89 IROC TPI HELP!!!

I just posted a question for the same problem. My 1990 ILE 5.0 has 5000 miles and ran perfect. Then one day I drove it 10 miles parked it for 15 minutes and it started and did the same thing yours is doing. I let it sit for 1 hour it screamed home running fine.

Since then It kind of runs good when cold and worsens as it gets hot. All is cking out fine except shop is telling me to replace all the injectors.

hunting on this sight first before I dump over a grand for injectors. Any help ?????

FUEL PUMP! Do you want to see my ASE credentials? I promise you it's the fuel pump. let me guess, kinda like a backfire through the intake when revving under the hood? How about when floored its sluggish to go, but goes a little better.... but NO WHERE near how it should, this is after it falls on its face. But then again, it could be so shot it just diesels or dies.

Re: 89 IROC TPI HELP!!!

I see you have replaced lots of parts, but what kind of troubleshooting have you done? I don't have ASE credentials like some here, but I would check you fuel pressure before I change the fuel pump again. Be sure to check it with key on, engine off... engine idling... engine underload, or driving the car. If you have steady psi in accordance with the specs for an 89, then the FP isn't bad.

I just fixed my car with similar symptoms to yours. Mine wasn't nearly as bad, but the rich gas smell and surging idle was bad. The car was no fun anymore. I troubleshot and checked all of my settings. Then I found a bad O2 sensor. WHat I thought was going to be an expensive fix, was fixed with an $18 sensor.

Just take your time and follow a systematic approach.

To start, list any mods you have and what troubleshooting you have done so far. Next, have you checked for vacuum leaks? Did you set base timing/minimum air/IAC/TPS correctly?

The red cat leads me to believe you are running rich. The cat was probably trashed from an overly rich condition anyway. Do you smell rich exhaust or see black smoke?

samanato,
Don't spend a G on injectors. You can get Bosch III's from FIC for about $200.
www.fuelinjectorconnection.com
You won't find better customer service either.

Temp sensor. There are three or four of them, did you get the right one for the ECM? Can you scan and monitor the ECM? Might take the ignition module to Autozone and have them test it several times, heats it up and will show failure.

Re: 89 IROC TPI HELP!!!

Just installed a set of the bosche threes from southbayfuel injectors. My car is screaming. Good people and fixed it right. My car is a 1990 1LE with 5400 miles always ran well just started acting up a month ago and three injectors started reading 2 or 3 ohms. This site was extremely helpfull. Thank you. Car runs better than new with the modern bosche injectors.

Re: 89 IROC TPI HELP!!!

Its totally impossible to diagnose a car over the internet...everyone knows that. The OP said nothing about testing the fuel pump or fuel pressure so dont mock me, hero. I still say its the fuel pump, most are 20 yrs old!

AIC valve has a lot to with the idle, do you have any codes coming up?Why a grand for injectors? If you have a 350 you can find a used set of Ford 24lb for like $50.
