A little advise
A little advise
Okay guys i have a friend with a 92 camaro with a 350 tpi motor in it. And he wants to mod the car but is not sure how to go about doing so.
he wants to do a cam swap with the supporting mods but the problem is were not sure exactly what supporting mods need to be done.
so if anyone has done a complete cam swap please list ALL the parts involved.
Also the motor has 150,000 miles so what els should be replaced or should he rebuild the motor too?
one more question
what about doing heads along with the cam can they be ported or does he need to buy new heads?
Thanks guys

Re: A little advise
There are some really good builds on this website. I recomend deciding how much money can be spent. Thats going to really determine what can do. there is a certian order most people follow when moding a tpi.
Headers are a good start. Due to difficulty most go with one type of short tube or another.
On the intake there are a lot of decisions that need to be made. If you plan to stay with tpi of change to a sr or a carb. if you decide to stay with tpi you can mod the system or replace parts. The factory runners can be seimesed. If do right they work pretty well. Aftermarket runners include SLP.edelbrock, AS&M, AS&M seimesed, and Accel (if you can find them) The factory plenum will need to be matched to what ever you do up to and includung being seimesed if the runners have been done. The base can be ported, gasket matched and even seimesed. Edelbrock makes about the only base still available. Others still sell them but they are still made by edelbrock. Big Mouth, Accel, (Fast has a really nice one) Even the aftermarket bases benefit from porting. The The air box needs to opened up, the maf will need to be descreened.
Go with a good exhaust system.
Still want more?
After market heads. You can pick up used ones on this forum or ebay. AFR are considered the best but are very expensive. Some get the aluminum Corvette heads and port them. Good results from that as well.
Their are a lot of cams available. If you plan to stay with the stock heads you can't go over about .470 lift. When using better heads, the XFI 268 and XFI 280 are very popular right now. Looking for cheaper? The LT4 Hot cam is still a good choice and very resonabley priced.(well under $200). The ZZ4 is smaller and popular as well.
There are a lot of other things you can do. If the car is an automatic, you need a mild stall converter, 2400- 2800 rpms. Be sure to add a transmission cooler. 3.23 to 3.45 Gears work very well with the TPI. The SR likes more gear
if you do all that, you should have a solid 12 second performer. UNfortunately it will cost some coin. Start with the exhaust, then address the intake system, then the Heads and cam. The 150,000 mile engine can be run if it's in good shape. You will be able to tell that when you tear into it. Don't go much past 5500m on such an old engine though.
I am sorry to be so long winded.

Re: A little advise
Okay well he has 3k to spend right now.
And to be honest i have never dealt with any TPI motor so alot of the terms used in the above post i dont understand as i have a 95 z28 with an lt1.
so if anyone cares to explain some of those terms i would greatly appreciate it.
So headers would be a good first mod would longtubes be better than shorties?
