305 Gone crazy

Just finished reassembling upper engine. All new gaskets, o-rings replaced on injectors, installed new hoses on EGR and vac system. Disassembled throttle body, cleaned and so on.

305 TPI will not start unless I spray starting fluid in intake. Then its sparatic, Sometimes dies, sometimes idles at 3 to 4k, other times just will not turnover. Also flashing code 12 over and over. WTF....please help

Re: 305 Gone crazy

Code 12 is normal, means the ECM working correctly and is powered up and not picking up a distributor pulse. With the key on and the ALDL jumpered the SES light will flash Code 12 over and over, until you remove the jumper. Sounds like a vacuum leak. Are you sure that your hoses on the right side of the throttle body are hooked up correctly? Top hose is crankcase vent to right valve cover, middle hose is the canister purge and should go to the purge solenoid on top of the evap. canister. If the canister purge hose is missing or the purge solenoid is open, that is a straight open vacuum leak that will drive the car crazy! It will do all sorts of weird stuff. Plug that hose off and see if anything changes. Also, check all you engine ground wires and straps and fuseable links on the starter.

Re: 305 Gone crazy

UPDATE
Hasn't been started in a year or so. Double checked hose connections. Checked and repaired some ugly ground wires and replaced batt. terminals. Removed IAC and carb cleaned. IT F@#N RUNS. Reading other post I decided to adjust TPS. This made a huge difference. I think if you ever strip down throttle body adjustments are required. I'm glad theres a sight that makes me feel like I'm trouble shooting with a mechanic.

Had to kill the engine 20 minutes into running it, temp gauge jumped to 220+, coolant is boiling and blew the top of overflow tank off. This is odd because I replaced upper and lower rad. hoses and bought a new 180 Thermostat. New 50/50 coolant.

I needed the engine running so I can locate these new problems.......

Two sexy girls on the side of the road on my way home today. (pics)

Anyways, new rad. cap and fine wire repaired seemed to fix overheat. Gauge still jumps to 200+ as soon as its started. Also after twenty minutes of running the carbon monoxide smell is almost unbearable ??

Re: 305 Gone crazy

If it hasn't been started in a year, how old is the fuel in the car? Carbon monoxide is odorless.

Re: 305 Gone crazy

The gas is probably a year old as well. I added two gallons from a jug and a splash of injector cleaner. I guessed on the smell. It smells like fuel and exhaust. No leaks from tail pipes.

Doesn't want to cold start. After a few shots of ether and pressing gas pedal when it tries to die it will run in idle. It tries to run at about 2000rpm until I either adjust TPS or idle screw. Then it runs shabby at about 800rpm.

Also sometimes it overheats and coolant boils from overflow tank. Its odd but it seems to corolate with how well its idleing..... advise please...
