Re: Heads & Cam?

Your motor has only 1 camshaft, no 'cams'. But that question is so broad, its like asking 'how much water is there in the world?'

To give you an accurate answer.... what engine do you have now? What exactly do you want it to do (and be realistic) - nice driver? street/strip? race only?... how much can you realistically spend?

Re: Heads & Cam?

it depends on your wallet , what's your budget ?
Stroker Kit , AFR Heads, Lingenfelter 219 camshaft, Roller Rockers , Super Ram or Mini Ram intake and base , Fuel Pressure Regulator , Underdrive Pulleys ,Bigger injectors and a custom tune .

If your tranny is stock , it will go south with the new power
So think in a transmission rebuild and a matching torque converter .

Re: Heads & Cam?

Didn't mean to come off as a jerk, I appoligize if I did. Its just a very broad question when you don't give any parameters (ie. daily driver, needs be reliable, race only, etc...as well as what you are working with) so its a difficult one to answer.

But my question still stands tho - what exactly do you want the motor for? I mean, you could make a ton of power, but it won't be very user-friendly and will be no fun to drive on the street, and likely unreliable. You could cut back on the power a bit, and make it much nicer to drive and have reasonable reliability as well.... The easiest way to explain is like this:

Fast, Cheap, Reliable/Streetable - pick two.

The biggest bottleneck on any of the 3rdgen V8 cars is the exhaust system, but it seems you already have that covered. Upgrading the TPI components will probably not gain you much at this point... I'd suggest starting with a good cold air intake system (the factory one is pretty bad), and a set of 1.6 ratio roller rockers. A better camshaft is a good idea, but its a BIG job and its not going to be cheap... to do a cam swap properly, you're looking at a new cam, timing set, pushrods, front end gaskets, intake gaskets, valve cover gaskets, valve springs, locks/retainers, possibly lifters depending on condition. You'll also have to have the ECM recalibrated to function properly with the new cam.

It all depends what you want to achieve and i will tell you straight here, you'll need lots of $$$
Are you doing the whole thing ? Are you paying a mechanic ?
Since you know nothing about this, you are here in the right track, learning, ask and learn
nobody was born full of knowledge, take it easy, step by step.
If you follow my first posts back in '01 i didn't know anything, its been 9 years now and
im not an expert but i have done lots of upgrades and i tell you,its an addiction
you will always want more, now a good advice is : READ, read a lot
can you get a "How to assemble Small block chevy" dvd ? that's an amazing dvd
that shows you how your engine works (you'll need to know this) and the complete teardown
and assemble of it ,its a very good video. Go buy the Factory service manual and start working
on your car with the basics, tune up , spark plugs, wires, fluids and filters and regular maintenance
once you learn all of that, think in upgrades, if not , you will spend crazy money in mechanic's labor
and you'll never know what's going on with your engine and you can be cheated that way.

ps : i know its not what you want to read but mark my words !

Re: Heads & Cam?

You need to determine the cars goal/purpose, before anybody can point to anything specific.

Daily driver? Strip only? You building a car? Rockcrawler?

Way to many questions & not enough answers from you. Air_Adam wasn't a jerk at all. He asked because he needed to know those things he asked, in order to point you in the right direction for YOU, not anybody.

Lighten up & help us out, by providing more info on your goal, & don't go off on people trying to help you. We'll help you achieve your goal, but you gotta help us know what it is before we can.

Re: Heads & Cam?

sounds like a good idea calderone....I also found out that i have to buy WAY more stuff than i thought. not just the cams and heads but all the stuff that makes them work right and no overkill and all. and i do have a stock tranny and in bad condition at that....so maybe tranny first than evrything else. i will however learn as much as i can about my small block and how it works
