86 TPI...Stalling and bucking under acceleration

Hi,

I am new to the site, and looking at buying a 86 Iroc. It is exhibiting a strange, at least in my book, problem.

When you start it, it starts right up and idles...but it seems to idle a bit high. You can be under the hood and rev it up and it will rev up fine...90% of the time. Putting it in gear and trying to drive it? not happening...all it does is try to stall, buck, and hesitate. I did at one point get it up to almost 15 mph, but it really didn't like that. Put it back in park and she will idle without trying to stall.

Anyone have any idea where to begin? The check engine light is on and glowing, but for whatever reason, I could not jump it to check the flashes. It simply wouldn't allow me to do that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Shawn

Without codes it's a shot in the dark. Could be any number of things. I'd start with resetting the IAC and TPS. Both of these were off on my camaro and it would idle high then stall/buck when in gear. Try getting the codes again and make sure you're jumping the correct ports.

Unless the car is in good tune, troubleshooting is a shot in the dark.

I think your not jumping terminals a and b. There should be no reason that you can't getany TC's.

What exactly is he supposed to check? You say check the ECM, okay but agian, what is he supposed to check? If the ECM was bad, he would get a stead SES light. Now if he jumps A & B correctly, and the problem is the ECM, then he would get a TC 55 (ECM Failure). If he had a problem with the distributor, he would get a or a few TC's of 41 (Tach signal interrupted ), or a TC 42 (Electronic Timing Control problem). My point is that he still has to check for any error codes. Having no error codes is like trying to figure out which vertebrae is broken on a comatosed person, with without a x-ray machine. Think nightriderone. Dont just stick your fingers in someone elses koolaid without knowing what flavor it is.

Re: 86 TPI...Stalling and bucking under acceleration

Ok 86FliROC, let's start at the beginning. We really need those codes to help you.
1. Make sure the key is off
2. Insert hi tech trouble code checker(unbent paper clip) in A and B. Now let's make sure you are in A and B. If you are looking at the ADL, A and B are on the top row on the far right. Make sure the paper clip is touching the contacts.
3. Turn the key on/run but don't start the car and leave it there.
4. SES should start flashing. It will flash code 12, 3 times, then start giving you the trouble codes.

Re: 86 TPI...Stalling and bucking under acceleration

im experiencing the same problem ( tpi swapped in s10 ) it run fine in park , rev up very fine and fast... but when i put in drive i can move the truck in idle.. easily but when i step on the gas the truck dosent have that mutch power then the engine stalls.. if i didnt touch the gas it can idle forever... even in drive

(the engine was stored 4 years on a frame outside )

i changed from a maf to a map with a harness and prom that i bought from larry electric with a 1227727 ecm... fuel pump + filter changed , i tryed 3 maps , the distributor i also changed the injectors... i checked the TPS for mess... but it was nice 0.49V to 4.80volts at WOT

Vaccum readings 16inhg at idle.. i tryed to find any vac. leaks but i didnt find any

the ias when using the high tech trouble code finder ( bent paper clip ) the iac is making noise , someone said thats normal in diagnosis mode

any ideas?

I would check for codes, yes. Then check/ohm your injectors with a multimeter. You may have a bad one.
