white smoke from passenger side manifold area

i fired my gta up the other day trying to get it to idle normaly and it was finnaly again idling decent but then about 20 seconds after being on white smoke started coming up from under the passenger side exhaust manifold. Do i have a bad seal? what does it cost to get fixed at a shop since i have no experience with removing the maifolds and exhaust to do anything. If thats not it what else could it be?

Re: white smoke from passenger side manifold area

Nobody? i realy need to figure out whats wrong. Im hoping its just a gasket the smoke comes from the passenger side under the exhaust manifold. Im guessing its an exhause leak it come out consistently while just idliling. Is there a way to tell if it is a exhaust leak? and if it is it ok to drive or am i gonna damage it by driving like that. I will need to drive it to a shop if i cant figure out whats up. Thanks to anyone that can help this is my daily driver and i gotta get her back on the road getting rides everywhere is a pain lol

When it's smoking, look under your car. My cat is no good and starts to smoke after it gets hot. The smoke goes up into the passenger side of the engine which looks like it's coming from the exhaust manifold.

Re: white smoke from passenger side manifold area

Ill check under when in the morning when ther is sun light. It takes a little like 20 seconds for the smoke to start comming up. Something is also draining my battery now when the car sits i have no idea what it is since i havent touched any of the electrical stuff on it in a long time.

Re: white smoke from passenger side manifold area

if it is a bad gasket how easy or hard is it to change the manifold gaskets. I found a pair of shorty hooker headers on craigslist for 70 bucks but dont know if theres extra welding and stuff when switching do they just mount right up to the exhaust piping i have now?

Re: white smoke from passenger side manifold area

just went out and fired her up with a light on and seems like the smoke is comming from both sides under the manifolds and its reving to 1500 and dropping to 500 then 3 seconds later back up to 1500 and it just keeps doing it over and over while the smoke is comming up. The smoke smells like something burning. Dont know if its oil or coolant or what but theres nothing leaking onto the floor.

Re: white smoke from passenger side manifold area

so i just pulled both exhaust manifolds off the gaskets were still in tact so im thinking it might not have been a manifold leak even though it was reving high like i had a huge vacuume leak. Can i run the car with the manifolds off to see where the smoke may be coming from? I cant think of where else it could be comming from from under the manifold areas

Re: white smoke from passenger side manifold area

it wouldnt be the temp sensor under the passenger exhaust manifold which monitors the coolant temp to turn on the fans

Re: white smoke from passenger side manifold area

ive had gasket leaks from my exhaust manifolds before but no smoke pouring out, but you can hear it as you drive, not really at idle. i dunno, take a good look and first see where the smoke is originating from. it could be simple. i remember once i had a plug wire touching the header and that was causing the rubber to burn up a bit and produced some smoke.

i would check to see if ANYTHING is touching the exhaust. first and most simple.

also, do you have a CEL light on? any codes? for your other question about headers, they are all bolt on you shouldnt have to weld anything. it sounds like you have an exhaust leak somewhere. could be where the header collector meets the pipes. if there is smoke coming out from that far down you might want to get low and check down there to see.

Re: white smoke from passenger side manifold area

Realy? if so that frickin sucks. Car ran great before that and i got it running again after changing iac and replacing exhaust manifold gaskets. I still have a vacuum leak i can hear the air hissing out for a couple seconds when i turn the car off but it stops before i could get back to the engine to see where it is. Ive been dumping so much dam money and i know head gasket replair at a shop isnt cheap.

Re: white smoke from passenger side manifold area

Do a radoator pressure test nand if more white smoke appears you either have a blown head gasket or a cracked head.

Re: white smoke from passenger side manifold area

i have my headers open right now, when i first start it i get a puff of smoke but the car has always smoked a little and ran realy rich. Once i start it it doesnt realy smoke i looked yesterday after having the car on for a couple of minutes and it seemed like the smoke was comming off of one of my radiator hoses next to the alternator.

Re: white smoke from passenger side manifold area

man cant even use steel seal i saw that you need to turn your heater on while idling the engine i had to disconnect my heater core when it went and started leaking so i no longer have a heater to use for it. Ugh
