please help with running issue
I have a 87 iroc camaro that I'm about to blow up I been messing with it for weeks now and it won't run right. I got a new motor and i t took me forever to time it bescause I asked for help and everyone told me to search so I did and basically found nothing. So then I finally got it some what right and it still runs like ****. Well someone told me to disconnect the est wire then time it then disconnect the batter and then plug it in and connect the battery back up. Well when I disconnect the est wire my car won't even start up now. I don't know what I did wrong but now it won't run. Please can someone help me. And yes I did try searching and I couldn't find **** about the est wire. I just wanna drive my car again.

Re: please help with running issue
your frustrated. initial timing with the est wire off is 6 deg btdc.. if your timong is way out it might not start so rotate the distrib while someone cranks it a little at a time.. if you get it running set it at 6. hook up the wire and the computer will control your timing. make sure your firing order is correct. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 take you time and check everything.. getting mad at it is useless as you were the problem in the first place. you did something wrong

Re: please help with running issue
are you 100 pecent that you are on tdc and that your wires are going to the right plug, i had the same problem a few years ago same symptoms I wasnt on tdc. So i found TDC and re ran my plugs wires and then unpluged the est checked timing put in at 6 degrees Put the est back back in and that was it. Not saying yours is the same but make sure your at tdc with the wires to the right plug

prob a stupid question but how do i know im exactly at tdc i mean when i take the number one plug out i put my finger over the hole and i spin the motor and then i can feel air pushing then i just live the mark on the balancer up to 0 and then take the cap off and make sure my rotor is somewhat pointing at the number one cyl and then i start from there with the wires and then go from left to right with the rest of the wires in a clockwards motion is that right

Here's a link for timing;https://www.thirdgen.org/settingtiming Make sure you are looking at a clean timing tab, and also which way your moving your timing, left of 0 is BTDC. Hope this helps.

What have you or someone done to the distributor or timing chain or plug wires to be that far off? Was the motor working fine before the swap? Your distributor might be off a little.

Re: please help with running issue
i put the distributor in and the plugs are new and so are the wires as for the timing chain i have no clue supposly the motor was out of a 88 iroc i think with 60,000 miles i mean it looks like it has low miles theres no leaks all the gaskets still look fresh the only prob was the power steering pump was shot but i can use the one from my old 350 motor i just dont think im at tdc idk tho it did run fine but that was when i timed it with out unplugging the est wire so idk

Your going to have to find TDC on #1 piston with both valves closed, and then make sure it's on the #1 pos. of your distributor. Sounds like you may be a little off on the distributor, that's why your timing is FUBAR.

Re: please help with running issue
i guess i am alil off so my best bet is to get it on the compression stroke and then put a screw driver in there and then right when i feel it almost get the screw driver stuck im at top dead center right. i just dont know how exactly to get it on tdc

Re: please help with running issue
When you get close to TDC on #1 cylinder on the compression stroke, align the mark from the crank shaft on 0 on the tab. Now you are at TDC. Then align the distributor to align up on #1 of the cap. You will probably have to turn the engine by hand to get it dead on the 0 mark. By the way, #1 on the rotor should be close to pointing to #1 cylinder, then just fine tune your alignment so that the rotor is exactly on #1 of the cap. Take your time, you'll get it.
