flat tappet or roller ???

im redoing a 86 40k iroc that i bought in october ...complete paint job and im also going to give it somemore horsepower .. the motor runs great so i dont have to pull it and go through it ... so far ive put in a new 255 fuel pump,3.42 gears with a eaton posi,3 inch exhaust and magnaflow convertor, ive gathered hooker 2055's headers, tpi ported big mouth lower intake, big tube runners, ported plenum.. im going to order tfs 56cc aluminum heads for it but i cant decide on what camshaft to go with ..

my main question is what would it take to put a roller cam in my non roller block ? the cam im thinking about is the comp. 08-501-8 which is the xr-264-12.. or should i just put a flat tappet in and call it a day ?? thanks for any input from the cam guru's or guys that have done this before ..

Re: flat tappet or roller ???

you'll need retro fit roller lifters and a roller cam, also will need shorter push rods being the lifters are longer

Do yourself a favor and put in the best cam you can. Now maybe the only chance you get!

You'll need a cam button to control end-play at the front of the cam, and possibly a different distributor gear, depending on your cam choice.
As was already said you'll need the retro-fit roller lifters with the link-bars, and shorter push-rods.
The cam in my signature was designed by LPE to go into 305 TPI builds.

Roller cam pushrods are 7.200" long but actual length needed should be checked before buying.

Re: flat tappet or roller ???

retro fit lifters have a link bar to keep them aligned..so ull need the 853-16 or the 885-16 lifters for a retro fit engine. The 12-412-8 is the retro fit version of the XR264HR...The 8-412-8 is the version of the same cam for engines that came from the factory as a roller motor.
