idle problem/throttle problem? tpi
idle problem/throttle problem? tpi
I have an 1985 iroc-z camaro with tpi. has an ed wright chip in it for my setup. I can not find any vaccum leaks, cleaned egr (vaccum style), cleaned iac, tps is set at .58, no engine codes. It starts up fine, idles great initially and then after it warms up or I drive it around idle jumps and will sometimes com back down but most times climbs as high as 2500 rpm's. Also when I drive it, it doesn't seem like I'm getting full power. In park it revs smooth and linear all the way to 6000 plus. but not in 1st gear.
Mod list is:
350 forged motor
cam is 480 lift and 288 dur
roller tip rockers
headers
30lbs inj
adj reg set to 48
58 mm tb
ported plenum
accel dist w/super coil
everything is pretty much new except for sensors and egr.
Can anyone help with suggestions? Thanks and God bless, Jeremy

Since you have some fairly extensive mods, I would suggest finding a way to view data(scan tool, tuner pro). You may have a temperature fuel correction issue.
Re: idle problem/throttle problem? tpi
Thanks for the help everyone. I replaced the IAC and it idles great and starts wonderfully but timing seems to be getting pulled for lack of hp. It's not running rich or lean, it's about perfect at idle. Any ideas on how much tuner pro and hand held scanners are and what kind to get? Better yet any good tuners in the missouri area within a 2 hour drive?

I don't know the cost of tuner pro. You can find out by searching the net. A used Snap On MT2500(Brick) is about $300. The newer inexpensive scan tools are all OBDII(16pin ALDL) and wont work on the 3rd gen cars. Most of these cheap tools are only code readers anyway and wont read data.
Sounds like you may have an issue with ESC knock retard. Try reading codes with a paperclip. Id expect you to find code 43. This is a common issue with highly modified motors running stock engine management. Your OE knock sensor and ESC module are setup for a low po stock motor. The inherent sound waves from your built motor are seen by the OE system as abnormal engine noise and causing it to pull timing. I've heard of guys replacing the OE sensor with that from an LT1 and having some success. In my case, I run ACCEL DFI with ESC as an option which can be turned off.
You may be able to disable the ESC in tuner pro. However, to make changes to your ECM's base programming you will need to swap your ECM for a later unit with an EPROM, or have a custom prom burned. Another option is Dynamic EFI's EBL piggyback controller. For more info on possible upgrades to your current engine management, PM Rbob. You'll find him in the DYI Prom forum.

I haven't been there personally, but Red Line in the Festus/DeSoto area I hear are good(If they are still open for business.) .
I haven't been in that area for awhile but when I have been, the majority of cars are F-bodies and one time at a gas station one of the mechanics was bsin with me about my car and said they do custom tunes and stuff.

TunerPro RT is free, but you can 'donate' to the developers. (I think it's 30 bucks). I use the program with the Moates ALDL cable and it works great, if you have a laptop. You can easily set it up to display all your spark data. Haven't quite learned how to datalog it yet however.
