Fuel Pump Done, which replacement?
While I was checking on my brake booster, my car died while running in my driveway. I figured it overheated. After I let it cool down, it still would not fire. When I turn the key to the on position, I don't hear the car prime anymore. I checked the fuses, they were good. I sprayed starting fluid into the throttle body and it ran just enough to burn the fluid. When I get off, I am going to put 12v on the g terminal of the ALDL to make sure.
Is there anything else I should check before ordering a pump?
And if it is the pump, should I go ahead and order a stock replacement or do a 255 lph pump. Some power adders could be a year away.
Thanks in advance for any help.

go to the passanger side and press down on the schrader valve you should get a nice spray. if it drips out then yes your pump is dead. if you plan on keeping it stock to a mid bolt on's i would stick with stock ac delco.

I would like to replace the fuel pump as well... Walbro makes a good 255LPH pump I've heard, but for non-boosted applications say around 300HP I think 190LPH would suffice.

Re: Fuel Pump Done, which replacement?
In my experience, fuel pumps die a slow death, I find it highly unlikely that it will work one minute and not the next, but I could be wrong. When the pump in my 86 died it would generate enough pressure to idle, but wouldn't rev
Check the plug on the fuel pump relay, you may have knocked it loose while working on the brake booster, also check the plug on the oil pressure switch and check all the plugs on the distributor, (electrical not spark) you probably just knocked something loose.

I believe you are right. I put 12v from the fuse box to the g terminal on the ALDL and heard the fuel pump fire up. I was looking around the brake booster before the car died. I am going to put a new brake booster on this weekend. When i get the old booster out, I will check all of the wires. I will look in the manual and try to find the fuel pump relay and see if that is still good.

Re: Fuel Pump Done, which replacement?
my pump went suddenly. drove it to the store for some errands, no problems no hints of trouble, when I came out, wouldn't start, had to get a tow truck. luckily I got AAA.
fault isolated it to the fuel pump. maybe for mild daily driver driving, a failing fuel pump could keep up. but it did fail suddenly, wouldn't even fire a little, as if the ignition was bad. but it was the fuel pump.
I was kinda surprised at the failure mode. at least it lasted 20 years.

Re: Fuel Pump Done, which replacement?
My fuel pump did a slow death too. Performance just got slower, and slower, and slower. But it was so gradual that in day to day driving I never noticed. I only noticed it when I stomped on it and instead of being greeted with the sound of screeching tires, I felt like I was towing a few thousand pounds extra.
I replaced mine with a stock pump. But now that i'm modding the LT1 its not safe enough. I say go walbro 255. if you have to go and do ALL of that, might as well go all the way and never have to do it again.

I second the relay issue first. No need replacing a pump until you've exhausted all the other (and much easier) possibilities.
