Help!! fuel pump going??

i have an 87 iroc tpi, recently on hard acceleration, car sputters and on some occasions completely shuts off dead. Can just turn off key and restart no issue, a couple of times when it shuts off i get a huge backfire, just installed new plug wires 2 days before this started, noticed some of my plugs werent in great shape so replaced those as well.. no change, im beginning to think it was just a coincedence that it happened at the same time.. have noticed that my fuel pump sounds a little louder than normal when priming.. im just hoping i dont have to change it... any other thoughts about what i can check would be great

Re: Help!! fuel pump going??

You need to use a fuel pressure gauge hooked up to the Schrader valve on the fuel rail. I think it should be around 48 lbs. Don't despair about replacing the pump if you have to, It's a PIA but can be done.

Re: Help!! fuel pump going??

Fuel pump mostly either uns or it doesn't (since it's electric). So if the car is getting fuel at lower pedal, it should get fuel at higher pedal. Might change fuel filter - that could cause an issue. And verify you have the firing order correct since you changed plugs/wires.

Mine did that when the fuel pump went out, put a new one in and no problems sense.

Re: Help!! fuel pump going??

Its not the firing order because it runs fine, even on a constant accel, just on WOT does it just bog and shut off, lose all power too.. No codes being thrown.. Alsoseems weird that idle and. Drive is fine.. Could it be a sensor? tps maybe? Is there a test I can do? I'll try fuel filter today

Re: Help!! fuel pump going??

Sounds like not enough air, check your MAF also.
Check & make sure all plug wires are on good & plugs are tight.

Re: Help!! fuel pump going??

so weird thing, today i brought my car down to my buddies to change the fuel filter, and after talking with him, he thought the issue was more a TPS sensor issue, so we unplugged it and drove around without any issue so we thought for sure it was it, so we plugged it back in and now its not doing it anymore at all .... maybe it was just bad gas that when i filled my tank it floated up and caused premature detonation or something??? not sure... just kind of waiting for it to creep up again
