Cam question
Cam question
I have an '83 305 with a Quadrajet on it. I recently installed a larger cam, springs, and intake, all matched to work together. I was considering installing a TBI, but because of the mods I made it would be quite expensive and time consuming to rework the computer.
I ran across a great deal on a complete TPI (everything).
Forgive me if this has been answered many times, I am all searched out from over 2 months of TBI research.
My question, can the TPI be installed with a bigger cam and not need to be reprogrammed, or would it be the same as the TBI and require lots of time and money to get dialed in?
Edit: cam is a summit k1102
Advertised Duration 262 int./272 exh.
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio 0.420 int./0.442 exh.
Lobe Separation (degrees) 112
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Cam question
Thats a small cam you should be able to run the stock ECM for now.
I read other running a LT4 Hot cam in a 350 with a stock ECM and it much larger what you have.
I run bettter with a chip but it should run.

Re: Cam question
If you're not an expert at tuning PROM's or hate doing that stuff, the MAF system is way easier to work with. That cam you listed is really tame, and a MAF system would probably adjust to it with the stock 350 PROM. MAP systems are far more sensitive to any head or cam changes. I'm running a MAF system with a Superrammed, AFR-headed 355 with a Comp XE-502 cam, and it actually ran pretty damn good on the stock chip. The only thing that threw it off was that I used 24 lb. injectors instead of the stock 22's. My custom PROM had the injector constant rate reset for the 24's. If it wasn't for that, I think it would've ran damn near the same with the stock PROM. So yeah, if you stick with the stock size injectors, a MAF system will probably adjust to the bigger cam without any trouble. About 90% of the members on here vastly prefer the MAP system, but most of them do their own chip tuning. I'm an old school mechanic and know virtually nothing about chip tuning, and running the MAF system I had one chip tuned for the larger injectors and I haven't had to touch the computer since!
