TPI Problem
im in the last stages of getting the car ready to run but the motor gives me problems its a '89 350 tpi its in a '86 t/a the car will start up fine and idle good for a bit then just dies i try to give it throttle and wants to die and wont rev up higher than like 2k i still have to set it to factory timing i think it can be either a tps, maf, injectors but not shure
i have a DMM and checked the injectors
i measured the ohms at the injectors and this is what i got
left bank from front to back in order:
#1. 16.4
#2. 11.9
#3. 16.6
#4. 12.0
right bank from front to back in order:
#5. 12.2
#6. 15.5
#7. 13.8
#8. 14.2

Re: TPI Problem
Yep, they are the same.
Just make sure they aren't leaking/dripping fuel. My injectors all ohm-ed out ok, ~16, but 4 of 8 injectors were dripping fuel into the intake. Just goes to show you; you have to check everything.
Hope this helps.

Re: TPI Problem
Well, glad you got them for nothing...they are probably stuck shut.
Check out this "facetube" video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFJlTfHyrUk
You may want to try that option, at least it will guarantee they are open and flowing. Your best bet (IMHO) is to pony-up the money for a new/refurb set of injectors. ~$150 and you can rule out injectors as your problem. May I recommend the Bosch-III design.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Re: TPI Problem
ok i tighten down the disty and it starts but i have to keep giving it throttle to keep it on or else it just dies after keping it on for a min or so i ohm'd the injectors again and the all were 16.2 i also checked the fuel rail to see if there was gas and i pocked the nozzle on the left rail and gas skirted out so there is gas what else could the problem be there is also some back firing noise coming from the engine

Sounds like the "acquired" injs are in need of a good cleaning to unstick them.
How long were they sitting in the yard ???

Re: TPI Problem
the car was new to the yard and when i compared the junkyard injectors to the ones on my engine the ones from the yard were cleaner so i suspected the owner of the junkyard t/a used good fuel or fuel injector cleaner my theory is that either the maf , tps ,iac is bad or fuel regulator not shure

Re: TPI Problem
.. Next is check fuel pressure with a pressure gauge... should be mid 40's lbs...
.. Check for ECM codes... write them down... then clear them, the loose distributor may have caused the codes... I assume the idle ignition timing is now set correctly...
.. Check for any cracks in air intake hose... all intake air must pass through the MAF sensor... air leaking in behind the MAF sensor will cause the ECM to shut the engine down...
.. I wouldn't throw the old injectors away, they're prolly still usable...

Re: TPI Problem
.. Guess you need to pick up a gauge... see if a local auto parts store will lend you one for free with a deposit...
.. If you have fuel, spark, sparkplug wires on correctly, distributor in correct phase, and correct ignition timing, it has to start... unless flooded...

Re: TPI Problem
My fuel pump failed and the pressure was too low to rev up the engine, sounds like your situation. A fuel pressure gauge is incredibly important in a situation like this, get one or get access to one... Could also be a clogged fuel filter.
Good luck...

Re: TPI Problem
thats what is wierd to me because the first time i set it to 0 on #1 spark plug it would start but then die out i had ohm'd the injectors i was told some were bad so i replaced them with some good junkyard ones and after that it would not even start at all it would just crank so i put back the injectors it came with and still no start just crank i did everything right but i will check the autozone to see if i can get it loaned

Re: TPI Problem
the car has sat for a year and i rarely used it due to no license at the time and before i thought there was a fuel pump problem but it was just a blown fuse the pump is great as is the fuel filter it was not so long that i had replaced it so i know those to things are still good but i will check the fuel pressure that way i can be sure

Re: TPI Problem
This is very similar in price and quality to my fuel pressure gauge that I have had for 7 years...check it out (certainly isn't $150).

Re: TPI Problem
.. $27 online... or free use with deposit... both great deals... guess that's where we are...
.. Car has sat so long, should also consider siphoning the gas out and putting fresh gas in... the old gas can be saved and added back in a little at a time to fresh gas, once you get it running right...
.. In the meantime, looks like you need to come up with a job, as well...
