Accell manifold TOO much porting?
Alright guys, I've actually started shopping for my new engine. Nothing is 100% set, but I'm looking at the Vortec/L31 shortblock, Trick flow 175 heads, and a hopped up aftermarket LTR TPI. Low 200* duration/Low .500" lift cam. Again, nothing concrete yet.
...so I've been keeping my eyes open, and I found a deal on a ported Accell manifold, that was hogged out for a high flow super ram setup. It's a good deal, looks to be in good shape, and I was gonna pick it up. ...but I'm wondering if it might be OVER ported. On a mid sized head, if this manifold has been REALLY ported, could the difference in port size cause a problem as the air enters the intake port on the head from the intake? I don't have the intake, or heads yet, and I've never actually DONE any porting/port matching before. I still have my stock TPI and stock heads, so even though I've read a lot, I don't have any real world experience or rule of thumb to go by.
I'm wondering if a properly port matched intake and head, even if it ultimately flows less, would be better than a blindly purchased, over hogged out intake manifold.

Only if the intake manifold opening to the head is bigger than the head. You don't want a lip protruding into the airflow. Then again you can always open up the heads to match at that point.
IMHO it sounds like the seller may have really screwed up and ruined the intake manifold. I will take it off his hands providing he heavily discounts it.

No, I'm not suggesting there's anything wrong with it, and at this point, I haven't seen pics yet. I'll tell you exactly what he told me. He said it belonged to an Accell rep. who had it ported for a high flow super ram set up. The guy who has it now just ran a stock TPI with it. I'm well aware it may just be fluff, and it's in fact NOT even ported, but the price makes it desireable either way. I WAS gonna buy it until I started thinking about it possibly being TOO big like I said.
LOL....unless you were just manuevering to get your OWN hands on it!!!!! hehe.....
